TL R I really need help choosing between selling some of my 10,000 point guard off for orks, or sticking with my guard!
So just to add some context to this struggle, a couple of years ago I was diagnosed with chronic depression (sounds irrelevant, but I'll get there!) and I began painting warhammer to solve the issue of not wanting to go to sleep. I've managed to paint about 3000 points of guard. Previously to this, I dotted to and from armies and got really sick of seeing grey!
I started warhammer back when I was around 11, and my first army was orks. I've always struggled to keep them, but they're hands down my favourite army. I just struggle to paint them, and there is so many! Admittedly, the new news of of T5 orks has really spurred my inner greenskin and its torn me.
I've got a receipt for about £700 of imperial guard that I could exchange, and I really don't know whether to keep the guard and persevere with them, and build my orks up slowly, or to exchange them and have about 4-5k each of guard and orks? The depression caused me to have severe anxiety, and as a such, came a condition called Aboulomania, which is pathological indecisiveness.
My partner and I are also planning on starting a family soon, so funds won't always be these loose. What do you guys think?

I don’t recommend selling anything. Instead, just scratchbuild some ork stuff.

Exchange the extra Guard for Orks. 10k of Guard is five times as much as you will likely ever field. 4-5k of any army is more than plenty to give you many options. For what it’s worth I have 5+ armies, all fully painted or nearly finished, with 3k of points total for each army and I feel I have plenty of options to run a variety of lists.

I second Gnarlly. Orks are fun. Don't treat them as an obligation to paint, treat them as something fun and enjoyable to paint, a therapeutic activity. Paint them entirely with Contrast Paints, weathering, washes, and drybrushed bright metallics, that'll make for a super fun rewarding little 30-60min per model turnaround time.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!" |

Well, my usual advice is to not sell GW stuff as in the future you'll want it back & it'll have just multiplied in price. Better to just store it than essentially pay for it 2-3 times over later..... Essentially stop spending on X & just shift spending to Y.
But, seeing as funds are about to become alot more limited? (you think GWs expensive? You don't want to do the math on diapers.)
Yes, sell off/exchange some of the Guard for those Orks.
I'd wait just a wee bit on actually purchasing most things Orky though so you can take advantage of the new Codex additional models that're coming real soon.

Yes this, having two armies beats having one. Whenever you get sick of playing or painting one, you can just switch to the other.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |

My advice is decide which models you haven't used in a long time that you may have in abundance and part with some of that. Keep enough for your army list changes but thinning the ranks is probably fine. I had 20K of Orks in old points and got rid of a lot of stuff I just had that was just sitting around doing me no good.
It was all redundant and unpainted or recycled but nothing I didn't already have painted and ready for games. It was kinda freeing in a way. I'm probably down to 10 to 8K in points now and I am still finding Ork related models I'd left aside and forgotten about...
I'm telling you, they bread in the dark like...Orks. it's crazy.
Good luck on starting an Ork army!
