Hello all, Been a lurker for a long time but I decided to jump into it. What is the best way to start? I picked my army as flesh eater courts but I don't know what books to buy.

Do I buy 3rd edition rule book plus flesh eater courts battletome? Do I need either or those items? Any other books should I buy?

Anything helps thank you.

Bergen

You need: Flesh eater court army book.

Generals hanbook booklet. It has all the rules in it I think.

Two or three start collecting boxes for flesh eaters court. And you are sett.

You don't need the big rule book unless you want to play path to glory. You can start just by downloading the core rules which are available for free from the official Age of Sigmar site.
All the warscrolls for flesh eater courts are available for free on the app, though this may change soon with the new app. You can get all the points by using warscrolls builder which you can find on the community site.
The battletome gives you access to the army special rules, magic, sub factions, items etc.

If you want to play competitively you need the generals handbook which contains all the new scenarios.

Let's not drag up this whole song and dance again.

To the actual subject,

Buy General's Handbook 2021. It has the core rules, and rules for more competitive/attempt to be balanced Matched play. It also has point changes.

Do NOT Buy the Flesh-Eater Courts Battletome. It's going to hopefully be replaced by a 3.0 battletome for them soon. Get your rules from alternate places like Battlescribe Roster Editor, or 1d4chan Tactics pages. Warscrolls for your army can be found online. I recommend that you don't waste your money on a soon to be outdated book.

Battlescribe will have your Faction rules, subfaction rules, relics and command traits.

So will 1d4chan pages, but they're more prone to edgy/shock/whateverbuzzword humor, just given the community they come from. But, as far as giving the information, their pages are solid. https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Age_of_Sigmar/Tactics/Death/Flesh-Eater_Courts

If you are a complete beginner to Warhammer( pretty much an "open" player ) then always consider a starter set first.

Warhammer Community just announced three such sets this afternoon and all contain the core rules, along with small but legal units for both Stormcasts and Kruleboyz. You can use flesheater court model kits straight away as they have their warscrolls( basic rules ) included with their model instructions or can be downloaded from their page on the main Games Workshop website.

Open play is basically you play with whatever models you have to hand and use what rules you want. For example, you have a kit of stormcasts that don't quite make up a minimum unit( "under strength" ) or you want to ditch model movement coherency as its annoying, or just cannot afford the big, heavy rule book.

The big core rule book and the battletomes are more for veteran and advanced players. For example, you play at a local gaming club or a tournament as opposed to playing at home with family and friends. The problem with both AoS and 40K right now is that they are in the process of rolling out new editions of their battletomes and codices. The good news is that the current 2nd edition AoS Battletomes are compatible with 3rd edition until they are replaced by their new 3rd editions. The only problem with this is that those battletomes have been updated with rules contained in a Broken Realms supplement book, which is a further expense...

My advice, at this time, is to treat yourself to a new starter set and purchase the current "Start Collecting Flesh-Eater Courts" set. When the new Flesh-Eater battletome is released, get that and then consider either the big core rule book if you are a narrative player, or the latest Generals Handbook if a competitive player.

Casual gaming, mostly solo-coop these days.
