So this thing used to work at some point (I think) but does it still? Bodyguard allows characters to be protected from ranged attacks, but is the vehicle Chronus is in a character?
I couldn't find a mention of this in any FAQ's by GW at least, but have seen it played in some battle reports. Note that I'm not looking at if it's good or not, just if it works.

Ultramarines FAQ:

Q. If Sergeant Chronus has a Warlord Trait, does it apply to the
Ultramarines Vehicle he commands?
A: Yes. Note that it would still apply to the Sergeant Chronus model when he is set up as a result of the Ultramarines Vehicle model
he commands being destroyed.

Tank Commander (Battle Scribe
Sergeant Chronus always begins the game commanding a vehicle. Whilst commanding the vehicle, use that vehicle's normal profile, weapons, abilities, keywords, and characteristics, with the exception of its Ballistic Skill - use Sergeant Chronus' Ballistic Skill of 2+ when firing with the vehicle instead. If Sergeant Chronus is commanding a vehicle at the start of your turn, he can restore one lost wounds it has suffered. If Sergeant Chronus' vehicle has been reduced to 0 wounds, set him up within 3" before removing the vehicle from the battlefield. He is treated as a passenger disembarking from a destroyed transport. Assuming he survives, Sergeant Chronus then uses the Infantry profile above and the keywords below. He is equipped with a bolt pistol, servo-arm, and frag and krak grenades.

Tank Commander is worded differently in Battle Scribe than in my Codex (which clearly states the Character keyword transference) and now I'm not sure where this wording is coming from.

It is not.
"Whilst commanding the vehicle, use that vehicle's normal profile, weapons, abilities keywords, and characteristics"

So it doesn't add the Character keyword.

Ah, I just edited the post when you responded. The Codex entry is worded differently than the one in Battle Scribe, which I copied into the OP. Codex version says the following:

Tank Commander: Instead of being set up on the battlefield during deployment, this model must begin the battle
commanding a tank. When mustering your army, select one ULTRAMARINES VEHICLE model from your army for
Sergeant Chronus to command that has one of the following keywords:

• RHINO • WHIRLWIND
• RAZORBACK • HUNTER
• PREDATOR • STALKER
• VINDICATOR • LAND RAIDER

Whilst a VEHICLE model is being commanded by Sergeant Chronus, it has a 2+ Ballistic Skill (even when it has
suffered damage) and gains the CHARACTER and SERGEANT CHRONUS keywords. In addition, at the start of your
turn, that model regains 1 lost wound. Whilst commanding a tank, Sergeant Chronus cannot attack with his bolt
pistol, servo-arm, frag grenades or krak grenades.
If a VEHICLE model being commanded by Sergeant Chronus is destroyed, set up this model within 6" of that
VEHICLE model in the same manner as a model disembarking from a transport.

Still no, for different reasons, then.

Bodyguard rule and all variations of it that I found in the codex specify a CHARACTER with less than 9 wounds. All of the tank options have more than 9 wounds.

From the 'Bodyguard' rule on page 151 of Codex Space Marines in the Company Veterans datasheet (emphasis added):

Bodyguard: While a friendly <CHAPTER> CHARACTER unit that has a Wounds characteristic of 9 or less is within 3" of this unit, enemy models cannot target that CHARACTER unit with ranged attacks.

The vehicle would be over the allowed Wounds characteristic.
