How do!

It’s official. For better or worse, Russell T Davies is returning to head up Doctor Who.

He’s not my favourite, but at least he’s a safe pair of hands. I just hope for less Dishy Doctor, Slitheen, Sonic Fixes and the god awful Psychic Paper.

Why my beef with Psychic Paper? The Doctor doesn’t need it. He’s the Doctor. The embodiment that if you act like you’re meant to be there, nobody is going to question you.

Cheers then Chris fingers crossed the door smacks you in the face on the way out...

plus RTD's perchant for all things Welsh means Matt Smiths call for Rhys Ifans could be a thing

Wait. This was the guy who worked on seasons 9 through 11, right? Didn’t that have a lot of sonic fixes and psychic paper?

I fell off the boat along the time Matt Smith took up the mantle, so pardon the ignorance.

Davies did Series 1 - 5, Steven (Coupling/Curse of Fatal Death) Moffat did series 6 - 10. Moffat got it in the neck for his story lines post RTD, particularly the 'Dark Fairy Tale' stage of the 11th Doctor. He redeemed himself by knocking the 50th anniversary out of the park, (and fell back down again in some fans views for the initial Twelve plus Clara 'not getting on' series and 'Oh no! Female Master!') and is now of course deemed the Golden Age compared to Chris Chibnell.

Davies will be a 'safe pair of hands' and if anyone can resolve The Timeless Child with a just few lines of dialogue, it's Rusty.

Interesting. I liked Davies era best, but that might just be Ten. Moffat was pretty good, but the focus on overarching plot over focused episodes spread his talent thin and its not really what I like about Who. Twelve had a lot of potential but I lost interest as the narrative tried to worm its way in from Eleven more and more. Really meant to pick it up again with Thirteen, but just never found the time and never heard that I was really missing out.

Moffatts sole sin was Clara.

I am not knocking the actress, but that particular character just veered between crap and irritating.

Missy was amazingly good, especially after whatshisface/RTD near ruined The Master by removing the moustache twirling camp. Also a very fun take on the character.

I remain dubious at RTD returning. For me, McCoy will always be my Doctor, and Ace still needs a proper companion send off (and given her character arc, there are a lot of possibilities) for being the Proto-Rose without the stomach churning Dishy Doctor Twilight Age Difference Of Actually Not Even Remotely Cool When You Think About It thing.

But hey. It’s still Doctor Who. I love it, I always will. Even the crap bits. Because that’s what love is, no?

I quite liked the Simms' Master (at the start, anyway) and Davies wanted to get away from the Panto villain, but was a shame we didn't get a chance to see Jacobi as the Master for an episode or two before the regeneration...

I think Missy was probably the high point of Moffat's run in general.

Simm’s was the worst take on The Master I’ve seen. His plot lines were solid enough (apart from using a crappy dance track when those head sphere things turned up), but the whole of the thing never quite came together.

As an original Whovian, I also think the episodic rather than contained story base was a mistake. When it’s a single story composed of multiple episodes, you can just do more. When most are “one and done”, it just doesn’t work. In My Opinion.

I know I’m somewhat Sad Old Git in this respect, and I fully appreciate and indeed endorse those who prefer the episodic New Who. I just likes what I likes..

Well, likewise. I straddle both camps myself.

The next series is supposed to be one long arc, and this may suit Chris 'Broadchurch' Chibnill better, allowing him to go out with a bang.

I think I’m a ‘tweener when it comes to Dr Who.

McCoy was and will always be My Doctor. His stories were part self contained, but also experimented with arcing stories.

As someone who once owned every commercially available VHS story and watched them all, and having seen all of New Who?

I get that the McCoy era both demonstrated the best and worst of Old Who, and in retrospect the best and worst of New Who.

Certainly, all my experience aside, Curse of Fenric is still the best and scariest story Who ever told.

And if you disagree with me? Well that’s just opinion.

You’re wrong though.

Interesting. I adored Simm as the Master, although the only other version I’m aware of is that horrifying decayed one a long while back. The guy’s energy felt kind of infectious, as though the character (if not the actor) was having an absolute ball carrying out his plans.

Honestly, it's been too long since I've watched the early parts of NuWho to have any real opinion on this, but I'm not surprised they've given the job to someone with experience after Chibnells poor reception.

I do hope they don't trash everything from 13's run though, I liked the return of non-super-special Companions and the newest Master is probably my favourite (I liked how world weary he was).

Can’t say I have. Mostly been going off of that season finale with the 10th doctor (someone mentioned something about floating heads) and the movie that transitioned the 10th doctor to the 11th. After a quick Google trawl though, it certainly looks to be interesting. How well do her episodes fare?

Pretty well*. She is is teased through Twelve's (Peter Capaldi) first series. Her identity was a secret at the time and there was all the usual speculation about a female Time Lord ("it's The Rani/Romana/Susan") before she declares herself as the Master. She's pretty much a semi-regular character for the Twelfth Doctor. I confess she took a while to grow on me but she's one of my fave incarnations of the character now.

*Tastes vary, of course.
