MP equipment or such; its the same game, same gameplay just with friends in a group battling against the demonic forces
D2 was originally single player but they patched it over and over to push players into multiplayer.
It wasn't just the multiplayer only runewords and uber-items (such as the torch), they upped the difficulty and demon resistances to be balanced for online play where character builds weren't restricted by the drop rates of key items and runes. In particular there were a number of patches that put damage immunity and double-immunity onto swathes of mobs on the highest difficulty which drastically shrank the number of single player builds that could deal with them, and patched out some of the 'safe' damage skills such as blessed hammer.
That said it was still fairly accessible for single player until you got to hell (the top difficulty, not the level). I've not played the remake so I don't know if they have loosened up or doubled down, but if the item drop system is unchanged there will still be a gulf between the power of single player and multiplayer characters with a few traded items and runes, even at the low end of the gear spectrum.
