Has anyone found a fix for the queue system? I sit in the que every morning after buying this piece of crap, and it never moves. I've been at 22 for the last hour.

Questions:

Is there anything I can't get in SP that only drops in MP?

Is there any MP only content?

I don't play D2 R yet, but my understanding is that their servers are overloaded more times than not due to the popularity of the game. That's honestly fairly normal for online features (or mmo games) that launch and have a huge surge of users. Typically such things can take a while to clear and resolve and provide stable connections. It can also depend when you game - eg at peak times you might have more difficulties.

As for singleplayer vs multiplayer - honestly D2 was originally a singleplayer game with some multiplayer features. I don't think they've changed any of that so there's no unique MP equipment or such; its the same game, same gameplay just with friends in a group battling against the demonic forces

There was the introduction of Ladder-only runewords, items, etc that can only be acquired on Ladder (so, online). This includes the super-hell super-bosses (I forget their actual names) that take forever to get all the stuff that you need to summon them.

Otherwise, yea, single player is fine.

I'm on a podcast about (video) game design:

And I also stream tabletop painting/playing Mon&Thurs 8PM EST

D2 was originally single player but they patched it over and over to push players into multiplayer.

It wasn't just the multiplayer only runewords and uber-items (such as the torch), they upped the difficulty and demon resistances to be balanced for online play where character builds weren't restricted by the drop rates of key items and runes. In particular there were a number of patches that put damage immunity and double-immunity onto swathes of mobs on the highest difficulty which drastically shrank the number of single player builds that could deal with them, and patched out some of the 'safe' damage skills such as blessed hammer.

That said it was still fairly accessible for single player until you got to hell (the top difficulty, not the level). I've not played the remake so I don't know if they have loosened up or doubled down, but if the item drop system is unchanged there will still be a gulf between the power of single player and multiplayer characters with a few traded items and runes, even at the low end of the gear spectrum.
