As someone who has somewhat recently gotten into mono tempestus in 40k, rather then just kill team (read: finally bothered to paint the rest of them) it has occurred to me that they aren’t the… strongest or most diverse army out there. So far I’ve been building lots of special weapon guys, and plan to run mostly MSUs with plasma or hot shot volley.
Just looking for some advice about where to go next, whether to even continue, or hold off building them (I live in fear about the chance GW might introduce “only what’s in the box” special weapons rules, invalidating all my stuff). And if they could (possible) be played at a tournament.

For reference my stuff so far: 3x start tempestus collecting boxes, in various states of assembly, one set of Bullgryn, (and 4 scions from a kill team box, the 5th seems to be lost in the warp).

Tourney wise? Yes your stuff cam be played in tournaments.

On concerns of getting screwed by GW in the future?
All the more reason to hurry up with what your currently building/painting & play with it now while it's valid.
In the future, should GW treat you like a DG?
Then you just reorganize your squads & pick up extra models as needed cheap via ebay etc

I only half a half-tempestus 2000p army, but the units I take are:

10 scions, 4 plasma guns, plasma pistol

5 scions, 2 hotshot volley guns, plasma pistol
5 scions, 2 hotshot volley guns, plasma pistol

I do lambdan lions for the extra AP, reroll to hit aura warlord trait, and force field generator.

Main obstacle is really getting enough plasma guns. I spent a long time converting more plasma gunners.

Atm the main way seems to be pairing them with knights, which provide something that can play for midfield. Goonhammer's most recent Tournament Recap has a list that placed well, 3 Taurox Primes with 10 man squads and 6 Warglaives.

6 warglaives eh, that’s pretty cool. I’ll have to think on that one.
