So for the new Gravis Captain depending on your secondary weapon you get a different number of extra attacks;
3 for the chainsword
2 for the powersword
1 for the powerfist
This doesn't work for relics though.
So if you ran one which would you take if ypu didn't take a relic to replace it?
I prefer to use mine as a dedicated character killer so I would likely go fust to maximize damage.

Power sword for flexibility. One extra fist attack is unlikely to matter, but 2-7 attacks without the hit penalty for different targets can actually matter.
Personally, with a 5" move and lots of non-viable transports, I'd wait until next codex when they give Smash Captains extra fighting style bloat for whatever stupid reason.

Assuming no relic, power sword.
You gain flexability and only loose a couple swings from the chainsword. The one extra fist shot is not worth the restrictions.
This is for a general TAC build in a vacuum. Specific jobs might have different answers.

From a BA perspective, probably the power sword to combo with +1 to wound to take down T5's on 3's
Not much reason to ever take a Gravis captain for BA outside of wanting to use the model though.

Plus he's already swinging six Power Fist attacks in the first round. Hardly a need for seven taking other buffs into account.

Yeah he's already got a BoltStorm. I'm going to be surprised if Boltstorm isn't FAQ'ed into a Powerfist eventually.
First, it'll be FAQ'ed as not a powerfist, but eventually it'll be a power fist like bolters, heavy bolters, and such are bolt weapons.
I think this is a good build It'll see more play than the Heavy Bolt Rifle guy. And the Captain with Boltstorm and Powersword already exists and I would hope can use this data sheet. Ergo I'm probably making this model with the Chain Sword, but using this data sheet for both models.
They also should have gone in for a penny in for a pound and made the second fist into another Boltstorm for an Aggressor Captain.
As I said this is a good build and nicer than the original Gravis Captain because options, and probably a better sculpt, but the real interest here is the Ancient. Being able to swap the bolt rifle for a power sword is interesting. I think he may be one of the few Ancients to have a melee weapon.
Edit to Add: The irony to me is, we still don't have a Gravis Lieutenant, Gravis Chaplain or Gravis Libby. Especially the LT. And we still don't have Jump Punch Primaris.

Extra attack doesn't work with relics replacing weapons, but I wonder about upgrading said weapons with mastercraft. It doesn't replace it so should work (but knowing GW, it might or might not). If it does, master crafted fist for 7x S8 D3 attacks (or 8x S9 with Imperium's Sword) might be a winner.

Or you know, phobos chaplain. Which is especially dumb as 2/3 of phobos infantry units are supposed to be CQC and they really need a buff to their melee capability (and, you know, actual melee weapon on sarge). Then you have phobos lieutenant and his comical options (sniper one can deep strike, reiver one has to footslog and can't take melee weapons, but can have a smoke grenade sniper one would like). The fact GW decided to release phobos army of renown before fixing it (and nerfing it by removing chapter tactic from already weak models) is utter joke.

Power Swords and a Chaplain yelling at the top of his lungs are too noisy, obviously.

With the right paint job, I think that model could really rock an axe.

Maybe. I'll dry fit each & then decide. It's not terribly important to me wich weapon, just that I like the final result.

They've been having their utter joke for quite some time. Zephyrim are basicaly second edition assault squads. And we still don't have a Primaris version of the sub-par current Assault Squads or Vanguard Vets. The closest is Reivers, and they still have to footslog. Even as subar as Assault Marines are, they're still preferable to Reivers. The chapter most distrustful of Primaris isn't Dark Angels. Its Blood Angels. Even their Primaris Death Company can't take Jump Packs. I also don't think there should be any 3/6 or 3 and only 3 units. make them 3-5. because 100 divides by 5 and 10 not 3 and 6. Automatically Appended Next Post:
I don't think anyone would care if you put on a power axe and said it was a chapter relic that counts as a power sword and not as a relic. Especially if you name your dude and name the axe. "I have created my own special rules, and they all zero out".

Sure, but then you will have problems edition later when GW will finally put someone competent in charge of writing Codex SM and axes will suddenly be available on primaris units (funnily enough, they kinda are now, if you're SW lieutenant because for some reason he won lottery for the only primaris axe in the Imperium). Then you will have a problem if you still want to play with sword statline.
I should know, I put lightning claws on my Blood Raven primaris to fit the bird theme (counts as swords or fists now depending on mood) and I will kind of miss this flexibility once GW will release LC to anyone other than BT elite primaris 20 years from now

Black Templar also have Axes on Primaris, it's just that if you want it on a Castellan (Lt) or Marshal (Cpt) you also need to take a plasma pistol (Marshal only) or combi-flamer.
And also as long as they're wearing Power Armour, not Phobos or Gravis.

Oh, right, I forgot, they are so associated with swordsswordsswords I failed to make the connection. Though, BT actually make this even funnier, as Castellan stole the only auto-plasma in the chapter and no one else, not even his bosses, can pry it off his grabby hands
It's kind of funny, really, his auto-plasma/master-crafted power sword loadout is best of all other primaris HQs, no matter from which chapter, and GW would sell tons of that box if they made it universally available (or let primaris veteran intercessors all take power swords too)...

One of the things they messed up is the no-relics. Taking that guy with the Teeth of Terra has some potential to add variety to lists. Also making any of his datasheet options Mastercrafted also potentially makes them a "relic" - but the wording provides a loophole. Maybe. Depends on what "replaces" means.
If you can still Mastercraft his Relic Chainsword it almost equals The Teeth of Terra. (only a -1AP difference) Allowing you to put the Teeth on a Primaris Lieutenant and getting a REALLY good anti-chaff blender going. Oh wait.

I'm planning on double fisty, but I dream of a future where Primaris will finally get access to the buzzy-fisty.
