Hello Dakka, I have a couple of questions I was curious about. I pulled the trigger and got one of the AoD box, a Kratos, a tactical support weapon box and ten extra beakies off eBay. With what I currently have I plan on making a basic “section” of a line company based on the Principia Belicosia chart, so 2 twenty man tactical squads and a tactical support squad.

My first question is what are people’s thoughts on the various tactical support options? For me in particular I’m debating between plasma or rotor guns. Rotor guns sound fun but I get the feeling plasma would be better for slightly harder targets.

Secondly I’m trying to plan my expansions to the army, and I was curious if anyone has the Forgeworld Phoenix terminators to compare in scale? Are they obviously smaller since they were early models to the Horus Heresy line, or since they are terminators they still scale well? It’s minor but I’m curious if anyone has any reference pics to compare.

Thanks for reading!

Support squads were already discussed here:

Phoenix terminators are a tad smaller than the plastic tartaros but it's unnoticeable on the table, the parts also freely mix with the other tartaros kits without issue.

Re support weapons. Each has a range of targets and roles they're effective at. Melta is excellent for fighting terminators and vehicles, plasma is effective against cavalry, dreadnaughts and automata, volkite chargers are a cheap way of lending more firepower to support your bolter squads and can threaten light vehicles. Volkite calivers are effective Vs infantry and cavalry.

Flamer squads are cheap and effective at close range Vs infantry and can stack enough wounds to make tartaros terminators a little worried in a pinch.

Rotor cannons are excellent for pinning enemy units.

This is only Vs marines aswell (as that's what people will be using until August)
Volkite is very effective against mechanicum due to their lower armour save and higher toughness combo (mechanicum thallax troops are a 4+ save but T5, and thralls are t3 and 5+ or 4+ with carapace armour, so can be instant deathed by the stronger volkite, negating their feel no pain rolls)

Against solar and milita volkite, flamer, and rotor cannons will all be excellent due to the proliferation of t3 and 4+ save models. Plasma will likely be too expensive to level against milita and only worth firing at solar elites such as ogryns.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the reply Strg Alt and Bobug! Good to hear the Phoenix Terminators aren’t too much smaller than the plastic Tartaros terminators, gives me a good reference for scale. Hopefully they won’t look too out of place next to the Mk VI marines.

Also thanks for the info about the tactical support squads. Still haven’t fully decided to be honest, maybe I’ll do two 5 man squads to see which I like more. Having said that might just build one 10 man squad, and later get 10 more marines later haha.
