Spawn of Chaos

Just wanted to get a feel on how each of the Chaos legions feel about Chaos. I've done a lot of research into each legion's background, but have gotten some conflicting info. So, for each legion, do they worship Chaos, feel indifferent to it, or actively dislike it? For example, I know the Word Bearers are fanatical worshipers of Chaos and hold the Chaos gods in high esteem. The Emperor's Children certainly appreciate Slaanesh, but I get the impression everything they do is for their own pleasure, not to praise or worship Slaanesh. Yes, indulging in their own pleasure is exactly what Slaanesh wants and is a valid way to praise Slaanesh, but I get the feeling they don't care if they please their god. I originally thought Mortarion and Magnus hated their patron gods, but is that still the case at the current time? Have they gotten over their hate and now happily serve their gods? And how about their legions? Does the majority of the Thousand Sons or Death Guard actually worship their gods? Or do they just follow their primarch? I've read very little World Eaters lore, but it seems they're similar to the Emperor's Children in that they don't really care about their patron god, they're just interested in extolling their god's virtues. Even the Black Legion, the face of Chaos, cares more about destroying the Imperium than they do about Chaos. For example, if another ancient, powerful god that has nothing to do with Chaos offered Abaddon more power than the Chaos gods could, the Black Legion would abandon Chaos to side with this new god. I could be wrong on that though. As for the other legions, Iron Warriors, Night Lords, Red Corsairs, etc. it seems they view Chaos as a tool and nothing more. Alpha Legion is a complete mystery to me, as I've heard so many stories about them, many of which conflict with each other, that I don't know what to think. Which is how they would want it, of course. I've heard they're Chaos worshippers, I've heard they're secretly loyalists and everything they do is for the Imperium, I've heard they're working for the Cabal, and I've heard one of the twins (Alpharious or Omegon) is working for Chaos, and one is working for the Imperium. So, no clue on them. Anyway, any insight is appreciated!

Keep in mind that the majority of most legions are fragmented and broken up into warbands at this point, so there will be some that are full on chaos worshippers while others are more towards a pragmatic "chaos is a tool" approach, so you can have a mix of both, particularly in legions like Night Lords where there isn't centralized leadership.

If we're going for generalizations, here are what most of the legions are like:

Word Bearers: True believers, most worship the pantheon as a whole, though there are warbands that emphasize one god over others.

Emperor's Children: I would say the majority of them are devotees to Slaanesh, just because they are hedonistics bastards instead of zealous apostates like WB doesn't make them any less adherents than World Eaters being mindless berserkers not being followers of Khorne.

Thousand Sons: Most worship Tzzentch, or at least delude themselves into thinking they're independent like Ahriman.

Death Guard: 100% worship their god, kind of hard not to when he's the one basically keeping them alive with all their diseases. Mortarion might have some resentment but he's more or less also fallen under the malaise of Nurgle's influence in having gone under denial saying that there was no other option for him.

World Eaters: I would say majority of them worship the blood god, even with the Butcher's Nails, Kharn extols the Eightfold Path that Khorne demands from his followers.

Black Legion: Given that they're a mish-mash of SoH, and basically anybody that swears fealty to Abbadon, I'd say a good chunk of them are chaos worshippers given that the entry requirements are so low.

Night Lords: It would be mostly in Legion culture for them to be disdainful towards chaos worship, though there are a few daemon princes that lead large Night Lords warbands so those would be likely Chaos worshippers or at least

Iron Warriors: Like you said, most would likely treat them as tools for further weapons (i.e. daemon engines). However, there are several instances of

Alpha Legion: Due to their decentralized nature and focus on cells, you have warbands ranging from those who believe they are loyal to the Emperor but against the Imperium and others who are full on chaos worshippers. And anything in between, it's basically how the Alpha Legion works.

The fundamental thing is that for all of the Traitor Legions, even if they think they're beyond the gods reach, chances are that the longer they stay in places in the Eye of Terror and fraternize with Chaos, you inevitably fall under their influence, whether you want it to or not. It just depends on the degree basically.

The Black Legion has god specific subfactions according to their Codex from 7th.

As with the DG, the short answer is: yes, all of them serve Nurgle, the long answer is: it's a bit more complicated than that. Most of them live / grew up on the Plague Planet and probably never had a choice, while the actual Legionnaires that were already part of the HH will know how the Legion fell to Nurgle. Many hold, like Mortarion, a grudge against Typhus for having sold the Legion, others seem to have embraced their believe (the new 40K Codizes seem to emphasize the fanatics more in my opinion).
In Lords of Silence we get to know a Plague Marine that wonders if Khorne might have been the better choice for him since he's the only one that still feels rage. The book also teils about a Guardsman that ends up as a Poxwalker, it's a pretty interesting side plot as his mind turns much slower than his body, but in the end he gets consumed by the Virus and Nurgle so to say.

I guess those facets could be told about most Chaos guys, that's why I wanted to put a light in DG as an example.
