Death-Dealing Devastator
|
So I've been working on an Imperial Fists successor chapter for over a year now. Got in a few battles earlier this year with an early version of the list that was close-combat and Dreadnought focused. It didn't go too well, because it required a Land Raider to transport the Assault Centurions. There were a few fun moments when the ACents surprised Adeptus Custodes, but overall, pretty lackluster in terms of tournament performance.
Since Nephilim dropped I've been tweaking and I think I have a better list. I would appreciate a brutal evaluation of the list from a competitive standpoint. As you can see, I have a few points floating about still and need to figure out what to spend them on.

Originally I had the Librarian as the Chief Librarian with Psychic Mastery as his warlord trait, so I could get Psychic Fortress up and protect all the Redemptor Dreads (because the Leviathan used to be a Redemptor with all the Dakka), but with the Leviathan to be my distraction carnifex and all the las-fusils and lascannons turn one, I figured I didn't need that as much.
The way I see it, I have the ability to pretty much close off No-Mans Land during deployment with Infiltrators and Eliminators. Both groups will be hard to move, the Eliminators because of their high saves, and the Infiltrators because of the Helix Gauntlet, plus first turn the Eliminators las-fusils are doing 4 damage to vehicles. That leaves me 2 squads of assault intercessors - one to screen for the Leviathan so he doesn't get tarpitted and one to raise banners or take actions. With the Sternguard and their Lazorbacks I have a lot of high str shooting and with Master Artisans, I can overcharge my plasma even without the captain around. Because of Masters of the Forge, the Dreads and lazorbacks have to be taken down to 3 wounds to even start to have their performance reduced, so you can't just shoot them down halfway or even 2/3rds and move on - you have to finish them off completely. Armor of Contempt helps a lot, and with the librarian, I can still take Psychic Fortress if it's to my advantage, to provide extra saves somewhere.

It's an interesting attempt. You have a lot of heavy firepower in this list, but very little combat threats. I am worried that you might just get bullied in close combat, and if you are planning to advanced deploy with Phobos units then this is even more of a threat as you will be closer to the enemy. I just think an army with fast close combat (Tyranids come to mind, necrons in some instances, etc) is going to rip you to shreds. I would really try to include at least one unit that is a potent combat threat. Maybe some Bladeguard Veterans or Vanguard Veterans would do you good.
Curious to know why the librarian is an include here. In my own games I have found psychic fortress to be somewhat unappealing. It depends on what you face of course, but against anything AP -3 or lower psychic fortress is irrelevant because of Armor of Contempt. I suppose I just feel like paying the points for the Librarian isn't worth the effect you get out of it. Instead of him, you could include a Lieutennant that gives out some nice reroll 1s to wound. Another amazing option would be a Primaris Chaplain on bike, give him the smash chaplain suite and you have a melee beatstick, which I think you could use a lot.
I see where you are going with the Sternguard and the razorbacks, but sternguard arent usually considered a competitive pick. I think these would be great for a fun-and-fluffy pickup game, but you did ask for a competitive standpoint. Sternguard and razorbacks as well are a bit expensive for what you get out of them.
The units youve created are pretty long ranged but they also have transport, so I'm sort of confused on what the plan is. Are they moving forward, or hanging back? Are you deploying them in the rear and just having the razorbacks move up? Overall I just think you're spending too many points on these units. For the 500+ points you spend on the razor/sternguard I think you could get yourself something a lot deadlier.
I like the dreads and the Eliminators a lot. Eliminators are really cheap and with lasfusils I think they're an absolute steal. Remind me; for successor chapters, do they get the Imperial Fist Legacy of Dorn? I play Imperial Fists (first founding) so I never looked too much at successor chapter rules. So check on that.
Finally if you have the points to spare, I'd try to get Icharus rockets on your Redemptors. They're extremely useful for only 5 points each.
Best of luck to you.
