Hello all,

Having sold all of my stuff years ago and moving countries I am now again in a position to start collecting and playing and plan to re-engage with the hobby.

But damn, things have changed quite a bit. I have to say its not quite as easy to get back into as I had hoped, what with the various supplements and myriad of rule changes that I need to get familiar with.

I have previously played 40k, 30k and fantasy (as it was) and have been trying to decide which of these to prioritize initially when returning. 40k was normally the default and original system i got into back in the 90s, closely followed by fantasy and then the horus heresy when that got up and running some years ago. The major debate for me is which system to get back into now as they have different strengths and weaknesses.

I am leaning towards 40k more as I always appreciated more competitive gaming as an option and the 40k scene seems to have picked up dramatically in the years I have been gone. It is also nice to see more frequent updates for the rules (even if they are still...questionable at times). the aesthetics and lore are also big draws to this as well as the fact that you will be playing the "modern" universe rather than just events from the past. sounds silly but as they have finally got a round to moving the universe forward it would be nice to keep up and experience the new events as they happen.

I see there are rumors of a possible 10th edition which gives me some pause. I now reside in Australia for my sins and so an army is not cheap and I want to reduce the chances of waste as much as possible. I am trying to pick between chaos space marines and black Templars as they are both armies I have played before and enjoyed, but it seems the marines codex is in bad need of an update but that may not happen until 10th or next year if rumors are anything to go by. Would it be a good idea to hold off until the new edition hits for the Templars? Or should I just commit and go for the black legion?

Horus heresy appeals as I am a marine fan and the more of them on the table the better so the setting has big appeal in visuals and lore. When I played that system a while back it was often hard to get a game but that could be down to my locale and it seems to have picked up a lot recently with its updated release. Which of the two systems (30 or 40k) are better in your opinion? It would probably be much easier re-adapting to 30k as it is based on more familiar rules but the new 40k system is appealing as a new challenge and, it seems, a more active community in general.

Then there's fanta....sorry age of sigmar. Never played it so have no comprehension of how it compares to the last time I played fantasy which would have been 2012. how similar are the systems to the old game? Do GW offer as frequent updates to this system? I would be choosing slaves to darkness if i went for this.

I like competitive gaming but also like to have options for more narrative games, a bit of everything so to speak. Previously I did have some....issues with 30k. It seemed the people I could get a game with were keen to just play fluffy and weak lists all the time and never "try hard", going on and on about how this was a narrative system and that I was not in the "spirit of the game" what ever that means. Now, I have relaxed a bit in my old age but is the community still like that in general? Don't get me wrong, I am happy to play fun games but equally I also want to try hard at times and enjoy that side of things. How do you find your experiences gaming in 30k? is there room for both in the community or is it as....weighted towards one type of expereince as it used to be?

anyway that's more than enough. I have lurked here for a while and enjoyed what I read and found it useful so far. I hope to contribute and look forward to engaging with anyone here on any of these subjects.

Hello!

Tough one to answer definitively. We honestly don't know about when the inevitable 10th edition will hit, or what the implications are for existing codexes. However the CSM codex has literally just released last month, so theoretically that's about as safe as it's possible to get at the moment. The SM codex was one of the first to release in 9th edition, and GW do seem to like giving the SMs two bites at the cherry these days so maybe there will be another one coming? But maybe it'll hold on till 10th if that's on the way.

Not played AoS myself but be warned it's *very* different to the old fantasy - more of a skirmish type game than blocks of troops maneuvering, and greatly simplified compared to WHFB. Definitely one to read up on at length, watch some battle report videos, or play a demo game in store or something before you commit.

Welcome to Dakka

Pick up the big black templar box and spend a few months working on it while we hear more about 10th.

With the prices high over there maybe just paint/build/buy one squad at a time. Take the return to the hobby slow and level up painting skill wise
