You can have some variation, yes, but their poses are very distinct, so there will still be a lot of similarities. IMO, using bits from other kits is probably the best way to make each unit look more distinct.
A box of Possessed comes with five models and each one comes with multiple options to build. Every single model comes with at least one alternate arm, three come with multiple head options, and one comes with an alternate base so you can choose if you want to do a hero rock or a dead marine under his feet. There’s also an alternate backpack in the mix.
I'm in the process of building/painting mine, there's not a lot of options unless you have a decent spares box and are good with a hobby knife and filler. The core five look great though.
I've been playing a while, my first model was a lead marine and my first White Dwarf was bound with staples
