Just came across this article, well worth a read. Like many of the middle-aged players on here, this was my first introduction to tabletop gaming and GW...

A nice article.
Without those 'what-if' moments, things would have been quite different.

The best thing about Heroquest is Stephen Baker!

Casual gaming, mostly solo-coop these days.

Thanks for posting that. An excellent article.

I wonder if there is something similar for what I just learned is another Stephen Baker game: Battlemasters. I was just a bit young for Heroquest when it came out (though I vaguely remember the advertisements) but I was the perfect age for Battlemasters which remains a childhood treasure and was probably the major catalyst for what became my wargaming hobby.

I'm now enjoying the release of Heroquest with my own children. Thanks Stephen Baker!

I got Battle Masters for Christmas when it came out. A couple years later I tried to paint some of the figures. And it's all been downhill from there.

I have a feeling there are quite a few wargamers with similar origin stories to you and I. As for painting, a few years back when I decided to try KoW. I took the Chaos I had acquired from a few sets of Battlemasters and The Beastmen, Chaos Knights, Warriors and Archers formed the core of my Kingdoms of Man army, which 2 editions later is now Varangur.

Most recently they've seen battle in a modified version of La Maisontaal Abbey

and other KoW gaming

I'm thinking about painting up one set of good guys and the rest of one set of bad guys to have a full set of painted Battlemasters to throw down for nostalgia at conventions.

Great looking army. I've been thinking about painting up a set of Battle Masters minis as a nice little project too. So many ideas, so little time.
