Hey guys Im returning to 40k after an 8 year hiatus. Ive always admired the Tyranids so I think my entry back in will be with the bugs.

The idea I had was a hive fleet that was from a desert world. The color scheme I went for was a spin off of the Kraken colors. I wanted the body/flesh to be somewhat slimy in texture appearance and the bone/carapace/plates to be a flat, somewhat dirty appearance. Anyway, let me know what you think! Keep in mind, an 8 year exit from 40k is also an 8 year exit from painting. I also apologize for the amateur photos.

The fourth picture is the best. It looks good. 2 questions though.
1. How did you get the model to be glossy? Is it because of the camera, use of glossy paint, or a varnish?
and
2. What color/technique did you use for the carapace? It looks very weathered!

I wish I could take an 8 year break and paint that good, even though I did take a 1 year break and came back painting better than ever....

I just used the GW 'ardcoat to get the glossyness on the body.

 

The model was undercoated black. Then on the carapace I drybrushed scorched brown. Then drybrushed on bleached bone. I tried to leave a bit of the black to show through so I drybrushed pretty lightly except on the ridges which I made sure was somewhat more pronounced with bleached bone. Then i just washed it with brown ink. Light in some areas and heavy in others just to kind of give it a random dirty look.

 

Im working on a Broodlord right now. I'll post pics when its done.

No,it looks great,the old dusty shell contrasting nicelly with the redish 'skin' tone.

I like it, but I don't like the pink with the red, I'd choose another color for those areas. I also think the red could be darker but that may just be the picture.

yeah the red is actually darker than in the pics. The flash kind of makes it look bright.

I am still kind of on the fence on the pink. Any recommendations on a better color?

 

if these were mine I'd do a gray. probably a light gray and no ink to keep it clean looking

thats an interesting suggestion. maybe I will try that and post a new pic and we can see what it looks like. After all its just paint right?
