Conceptualizing how I want to refurbish my current guard army which is painted and themed in a pseudo old world/praetorian/ventrillion way so is mostly about the infantry and artillary. The rebirth of rough riders is very exciting as it would fit theme rather grandly! I don't have the book yet but have been planning based on a quick look at the points page in Sprues & Brus review.

Brigade Detachment

Lord Solar (I normally resent special character use, but a horseback commander is perfect for the theme)
Castellan
Command Squad, Lascannon, Astro, MOO

6x Infantry squads, 3x Lascannons, 3x HB
2x Shock Troops

3x5 Rough Riders

Commissar
Commissar
5 Bullgryns

2xBasilisks
2xField Batteries (Lean toward HLC for anti tank)

Should have a few points left for either weapon options or a fleet officer if I want. So, thoughts? Can the army work? Opinions on best way to arm the shock troops, melta/plasma/both?

I'd like to keep vehicles to a minimum for theme reasons, but are transports mandatory in 9e? Initially I thought of 2xKasrkin in transports rather than the shock troops and bullgryns but I don't like validating the 9e pattern of having the new hotness unit only for it to get nerfed/points hike/both. I also used to be keen on sentinels but am also wary of what'll happen to them in a few months time.

Also any thoughts on the best doctrine for the list as it stands? Was thinking of Sharpshooter/Bombardiers to get the most out of the low volume of fire heavy weapons, but it seems like Born Soldiers is the only right answer for many as it means the lasguns might conceivably do something.
