I highlight black with ultra marine blue. Which is bright enough for for you to see it from gaming distance and in general less neat ness is required. example..

Well first of all make sure your black is painted black and not just primer. If your highlighting primer thats your first mistake.
Actual highlights for black will be easier once you establish what color scale you want to use to highlight blueish or greyish.

Im more of a fan of dark grey. Some wlill argue for blues because it adds depth when viewed woth the human eye...which is why i dont like using it. I dont want depth I want a subtle POP. The easiest no mix colors I can recommend are from Valejo's model color. Black Gray or German Gray.

The second tip is use it sparingly highlighting Black is a "less is more" experience. Too much and your not looking at black anymore. I would reserve the highlights for the top half of the guardian armour, ends of ovals for separation...like near arm connections

highlighted upper arm near shoulder but not the entire lenght of the bicept...upper arm forearm highlighted forarm not...Wrists and the ends of the fingers only. Hope that comes out understandable.

Use the side of your brush when possible rather than trying to pait thin lines with the tip by hand.   Put a natual light light bulb in your apinting lamp.  If your using fourecent light when you paint your go outside and be like "WTF" this looked great inside...

Good luck.
