As the title suggests. This is to share our experience with the experiment we ran.
We ran a 2K 40K game using the star wars legion game structure. We have repeated this 3 times across four players (6 games) so we can get a good measure.
So we used the 9th Ed rules and operations. What we did was assign each unit to the legion token system. We used legion tokens as well for simplicity.
We also took some stratagems and they were our "PIP" cards. Lower CP meant lower PIP so you went first.
We also used the points "bidding" sytstem. So player with lower points was the blue player.
When a unit activated it went through the 9th Ed rules, command, move, psychic, shooting, charge, fight, morale. We made the choice however the command and morale stayed where they were and the other phases all melded into one, difference being charge and move melded into one phase you had to declare if you were charging before moving.
There were a couple of nouances as we played which we didn't think about which we discussed as we went on.
Overall our experience was as follows.
- The games once we got used to it were around 20 minute shorter than a standard 9th ed game.
- We found the freedom to do things in an order we desire to be alot for tactical and enjoyable.
- Things became a little fuzzy with doctrines and other army equivelents so we had to house rule some of it.
- It made the first battle round feel ALOT more fair.
- We see why legion uses the dice it does, the D6 dice become combersome sometimes with this gameplay style. It did feel like we rolled ALOT.
- Objectives changed alot more, it became alot more seesawish on the objectives.
- Overall we had a blast. Some things felt abit combersome/sluggish. But the overall adoption felt alot smoother and more enjoyable.
We are likely to play this style form time to time in future (10th Ed depending. IF runours are true then 10th ed is gunna be a halfway house between legion and Age of Sigmar anyway).
But that is my two scents for you peeps. Do with this information as you wish.
