If I have a Pink Horror, who then splits into two Blues, each of which then splits into one Yellow, how many models have I killed for the purposes of morale? Is it 1 or 5?

I'd say 3, as the 'Split' rule makes it clear that the models destruction is not replaced by the splitting, but instead as a consequence of it two Blue horrors or one Yellow horror each are added to the unit. The total of destroyed models is 3: one pink horror, two blue horrors. If the yellows are also killed, the total is 5. However, for the purpose of determining if the unit is below half strength for combat attrition, you'd count all models currently in the unit!

Agreed, its 3. One pink, two blue. Also note that its possible that you have to roll more dice for combat attrition. A 10 model unit can grow up to 19 models, and when morale fails you have to roll 19 dice for combat attrition. It gets even worse when you return models to the unit with warp storm points, and you still fail morale. If 3 models come back you have to roll 22 dice for combat attrition. You are paying points for an ability which is supposed to help you, but now is actually bad for you.

I can't see how adding models is bad for you if you end up with more models in your unit after the Combat Attrition Test than you would have had if you didn't add the models in the first place. So what if you add three models which causes you lose 1 more model during Combat Attrition. You are still up 2 models.
