So, this month's dakkadakka painting competition is 'mistakes were made'. A tricky subject to portray with a single model and I figured this was a good opportunity to try this idea I've had in my head. I have this lovely ork pilot model that's been sitting on my shelf. My itself it works; something must have gone wrong for an ork fighter pilot to be on the ground and not flying through the sky.
Now, the goods news is that I had the pilot done pretty quick. I don't feel my skills are getting better lately, but my speed has certainly increased. I feel like I have painted this up to a pretty good level of quality and it only took a couple days. Works case scenario I can just post this. But now I can move on to the actual diorama.
I finally have the use for all this junk and bits I've been collecting. Now I don't have to feel like a hoarder!
I was going for some kind of fuel container. It's not as tall as it want, but it will work as a piece of improvised high ground.
The story so far is that he has bailed from his ride and was wise enough to pack a parachute. He has found a nice big barrel of fuel and now he needs to find a new ride. Now, of course, there will be a snag to his plan and that will come next.

The scenery is pretty much complete. I'll add some grass tufts later and I might add some labeling to further break up the shape.

I like it!
I'm writing down some of the things you've done to add character to the diorama- they lend themselves to a very realistic/believable vignette, seem very simple in execution but are extremely imaginative in development. Things like the rivets on the vertical steel plates, or the access hatch set in the ground. The way you arranged them, they belong where they are- they aren't just bits tossed at the base (like I do) and Bog knows where they'll stick!
Very nice build all around. Automatically Appended Next Post: And it looks like you've used the end cap from a roll of plotter paper for the base itself- I've got a couple of those floating around and now you've given me ideas!

thank you for the compliments. I will admit, I need to work on my basing techniques. Move past texture paints and washes. Making this diorama was a strange exercise between the creative and practical portions of my min. Trying to makes all these come together into something believable.
Good eye with the base piece! I knew I could use them for something so I've had them tucked away in a box. It's rather nice to have my inner hoarder vindicated.

I said that the Ork pilot would be in some kind of trouble. This is the trouble.
Maybe the Orks were hoping to grab as many resources as possible before the Tyranids destroy everything. This guy must have gotten a little too greedy and got a little too close to the Tyranid front line.

Cool diorama idea, with some well painted minis. The purple on the nids is fantastic, can’t wait to see how he escapes this one!

Cracking diaorama, with a great little story. Hopefully the ladz get to him soon, those flying nids are getting a bit close for comfort!
