When an unit contains different toughness profiles, how does the wound roll work?

Allocating the attacks happens after the wound roll, so what wound profile you use?

Page 15 of the Designer’s Commentary:

Unit’s Toughness Characteristic: If an Attached unit contains models with different Toughness characteristics, for the purpose of determining that unit’s Toughness characteristic, use the highest Toughness characteristic amongst that unit’s Bodyguard models.
If a non-Attached unit contains models with different Toughness characteristics, for the purpose of determining that unit’s Toughness characteristic, use the highest Toughness characteristic amongst all of that unit’s models. In either case, When resolving attacks against such a unit, determine that unit’s Toughness characteristic when it is selected as a target.

no, you use the toughness 2 of the unit. his tougness of 5 only comes in to play if he is on his own.

Only for units without an attached Character
EDIT: or rather, for a unit with an attached character you only consider toughness values from the Bodyguard

That's why under the Gretchen card it says that the toughness of the runtherd is considered to be 2.
Otherwise a unit of gretchin would always have t4
