Hey all,

I’ve been trying out GSW chrome black paint. I’m not getting the chromeiest finish, I have see really good black glass type finishes on YouTube. I’m getting more of a dark gunmetal with a bit of a reflective finish. I’m thinking that my gloss primer might not be glossy enough.

Can anyone recommend a really shiny gloss primer?

Tamiya Gloss Black Spray. If you watch Barbatos Rex on YouTube he has a couple of videos with GSW chrome paints through an airbrush.

I bought some Spaz Stix Gloss primer awhile ago- it works well, as it's meant for Auto, only "Fun" thing was going through paint thinners/ turpentine before finding out it cleans with mineral spirits..

I have done a LOT - seriously, far too much - of testing with chrome finishes over the past year (I have found GSW chrome to be my favourite) and the one thing that is absolutely essential is to NOT use acrylics. Acrylic paints can't get even close to glossy enough. The really glossy stuff that gets you a mirror shine is lacquer paints. You don't really have to worry about the 'primer' label, as lacquers are tough as all hell anyway.

I've found the most consistent results to be the 2 part stuff:

^ That is what I have been using, but I think it's a UK import brand so shop around. the key thing about it is that it's a 2 part polyurethane paint. You mix the two paints 50:50 prior to airbrushing it on, and clean up with lacquer thinners.

It's inconvenient to work with, but there is no comparison when it comes to results.

Any chance you can share some examples of your results over lacquer gloss?
