I ran into an unusual interaction yesterday and was curious if anyone knew how to resolve it. I have a big blob of cadian shock troops with a castellan and command group attached. The Castellan gives them sustained hits 1. The command group has the Drill Sergeant enhancement which states that if they remained stationary they score critical hits on a 5+. An enemy charged them and they overwatched. They only hit on a roll of 6, but they are technically triggering sustained hits 1 on a roll of 5 or 6.....curious how everyone would rule that one.

Sustained Hits scores ADDITIONAL hit(s).
That, to me, reads as requiring a regular hit to get the bonus hit(s).

Notably, the requirement is not that a unit "remained stationary" but that it "Remained Stationary". A small distinction, but I believe the capitalization calls to it being of the movement type noted in the movement section which is "Remain Stationary." I'd argue that in order to use the enhancement you would have had to use the particular movement type that turn, which you cannot have made on an opponents turn.

I agree. A unit cannot Remain Stationary on the opponents turn. This means neither Drill Commander nor Born Soldiers are active when you Overwatch.

Agreed. Remain Stationary is the trigger, and lasts for that turn, not into your opponent’s turn. In your opponent’s turn you don’t have the option to Remain Stationary so it’s moot, as the rules won’t be triggered.

Also, Overwatch states that you require natural 6s to hit regardless of any modifiers, and i would argue that the more specific rules of this Stratagem overrules the general rule of the Enhancement - we have circumstancial evidence in the few abilities that actually improve the rolls when firing Overwatch, which this specific Enhancement has not: GW seems to be aware of a distinction between abilities that affect it and abilities that don't, so RAI points to no bonus here.
