So- prolly late to the game here, what with popularity of Dorian Heresy- BUT I have my own fan re-work retcon I like to call the Horus Apotheosis, or Horus Ascension. It's basically the Bizzaro-version of 40k lore, and it's not really written all down, much more ideas in my head, but here are the major bullet points:
-Curze's pod lands in a Nostromo hive, where he's raised by a medicae and his wife. His adopted parents are killed by gangers when he's 4-5 (looks about 8-9 because: primarch) so he goes out and gets vengeance by becoming the Night Haunter. But with the tuteledge and caring of actual parents, he has a better sense of morals.
-Russ is found later, and the Fenrisians have a legend of the "Blood Wolf", which is really him drenched in blood. He gets the name "Russ" because of this, and is more of a curiosity than adopted and it's only when he stands upright and begins talking do the people take him seriously. (He falls to Khorne, Obs)
- Vulkan becomes more of a Metallurgist, than a smith and learns the ancient secrets of transmutation of metals and changing their properties .His obsession with fire garners him the attention of Tzeentch.
- It's said in the Lore that the Khan and Fulgrim could've been switrched. Jhagahti gets taken in by a merchant and gains an opulent taste for the finer things, while Fulgrim becomes more of a survivalist on Chemos- I also toy with the idea that he managed to gain a semi-cult status, as his regeneration ability means he could provide food for the workers. Would be a gross way to have the Chemosians survive, and have his legion's gen defect saved.
-Ferrus is mostly same of Dornian- he gets Necron- Corrupted.
-Corax is visited by Belekor early on, and learns to bend shadows.
-Dorn's tenacity is his undoing as his legion becomes infected with a warp-virus, and he bargains for their lives.
-On Caliban, more reverence is placed on the "Hunting Beasts" and they are worshipped as demi-gods. Hence, the Lion is seen more as an immortal akin to the beasts than man.
-Sanguinius and the Blood angels eventually become more Space vampires, called the Blood Drinkers.
> Crux of this is again Horus- much happens the same, but in the lodge of the Serpent, the Chaos gods reveal him the future. But, Tzeentch reveals the EXACT 40k timeline, because- Tzeentch. Unexpectedly, Horus reaches into the depths of his soul and dredges up the strength to hold the gods back and heal himself, perhaps a shard of the Emperor or something more. Horus becomes the Anathema, and Emps' light is diminished.
Emperor freaks out at the lack of power and goes to Chaos Gods for help. They're not happy and without his special powers to hold them back, thay call in his dept from Moloch and making the Primarchs. Emps becomes corrupted and those closest to him are corrupted and taken by Chaos.
Horus, of course, kills Erebus and Kor Phareon and disbands the Lodges and Chaplins. He convinces Lorgar he is NOT a god, though he is far more powerful now by stating that humanity gives him his power, thus the power resides in Lorgar. "No Gods but which we make ourselves" sort of thing.
Horus is able to convince most of the Mechanicum to back him by stating they can do whatever they want- their Omnissiah is corrupt, so they should seriously rethink their philosophy.
The Seige of Terra is then not to attack in betrayal, but to save the human race's birthworld. Horus is slowed by Guilliman's Macragge empire harries him from the side, and has to deal with the fact the average Citizen doesn't know about Chaos, daemons, or Emp's fall. So, it's an uphill battle but he gets to Terra. Mortarion is killed whilst helping fight off Corrupt Emperor, because his anti-psyker affinity helps Horus. With the Emperor killed, the corrupted legion are sucked into the warp.
Magnus has to take up the Golden Throne, or it will rip a new rent in reality, but Horus discovers the Webway project, so travel becomes better overall.
Like I said, very rough but would like comments/ critiques/ criticisms/ comparisons/ whatevs.
