TONKS!

That’s right, Tonks. Like tanks but small and fun and mostly daft. TONKS!

https://28-mag.com/games/

I was looking for a simple and fun game that my son could bring to school and play with friends in their after-school club. (Because 40k is a horrible after-school-club game, was when I was in school, still is.)

So I’m getting building.

Four Tonks for players to choose from. I’m making a heavy iron-clad Tonk, a nifty hi-tech Tonk, an organic gribbley Tonk and a mini-Russ Tonk.

Already starting to take shape

I’ve abandoned the original idea for the fancy hi-tech tank by salvaging tank parts from a tank toy. Not cheating to make a toy tank from a tank toy, is it?

Love these goofy little TONKS. A fun project! Especially fond of the biological one - giving me a big elephant feeling. Elephant tank is a funny idea.

Thanks all. Nice to see there’s some interest in this mad little project.

Oh, what’s this?

Bit of intense scrathbuilding last night.

It’s a turret for a rocket tank of course!

The Mini-Russ also got a mini dozer blade.

Progress for tonight has been mostly organic.

Getting nice and gross and gribbly.

And then the back end of the mini-Russ got some gubbins.

I think I've seen this pop up on youtube a few times. I wonder if my grot tanks would work...

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

I went and snooped at you grot tanks and I’d have to say Absolutely! They all look to have rotating turrets and that’s about the only stipulation for them to be playable tank minis. They look great too!

In other news…

I think I’m gonna be sick.

It does look a bit like a Klanger, right enough. Maybe I should paint it pink too!

Last night it was the turn of the Iron-clad scrap-master to get some more armour plates.

This one looks pretty much done. Maybe just so spiky ram bits on the front and it’ll be painty time for this one.
I’ll maybe give the Googlyeye headlamp some wire grill too with a bit of Greenstuff. Maybe some rivets hare and there too. Details details.

I like the organic, gribbly tank the most but others look cool too.

Yes the gribbler has been a real stand-out surprise for me too. It’s going to be a popular choice in games.

Ok so yes, while some more progress has been made, two more Tonks almost compete; (I’ll share photos of them when they’re done.)
I have an even more exciting development which is this.

A Haunted Pumpkin Tonk is taking shape and has to be 100% done by the end of the month.
Sculpting has begun but is admittedly very rough.

Slow progress for this (my favourite) little Tonk!

The mini Russ has got some side armour and a driver’s window and some adorable little sponsons.

And what’s more, Ive got three of these builds completed now.

Rocket Tonk got the fast light-tank vibe with some bullet proof glass windows and headlights. Probably not Tonk-proof.

The ScrapMaster also received a final touch.

Nice bit of smashy pointy action putting the Ram in Ramshackle.

And now even more Gribbely than before.

The GribbleTonk is all set for a nauseating paint job.

Thanks guys.

This fifth and most seasonal of Tonks is also coming together.

It’s a pretty weird one, I’ll admit but the game rules do encourage you toward the weirder the better.

I was thinking about some possible designs for a couple more but maybe I’ll get these done first. But you never know, if I get my hands on just the right bits…

More you say? Very happy to oblige!

I just had an evil idea!

Also, if you’ve been following the monthly painting challenge you’ll know my Pumpkin Tonk is painted. Proper pics of that coming soon. In the meantime…

I saw the pumpkin Tonk in the comp thread, and it is, indeed, a groovy model. The use of Green (the color of necromancy!) as a through line was a great choice.

Cheers Josh. I’ve enjoyed the randomness of the idea and I’m happy it’s come together with some measure of success.

Tonight’s progress…

Is it Phoning-it-in to slap a toy tank turret on top? I’m hoping to be able to detail it up with some suitably spiky riveted armour for a classic Demon Engine look. Definitely Need MOAR spikes for this one.

Thanks Vej, hopefully it’ll come out scarier than the average Thomas & Friends Halloween special.

And true to form, rather than finish the half completed Tonks on the table, I’ve gone and started another one!

This is getting reTonkulous!

Once again great work!

On the Thomas engine what did you use for the treads? Just rubber bands or something else?

Thanks in advance.

It’s EVA foam from a kiddies craft kit. Same as the tracks on the scrap-Tonk. But this time I’m going to make them dead spiky too. Maybe more EVA foam in triangular spikes will be the ticket.

Great choice for a "classic Demon Engine look."

Thanx MegaKrump.

How’s this for the classic daemon engine look?

I like the spikes on the tracks but not so much on the wheel hub. Not sure what to do there. These things don’t tend to have wheels much so not many examples to follow.

Keeping the same old eyes is the best bit. Still feels slightly less maniacally demonic than I was really going for.

And then while that was curing I got the Mini-Russ build completed.
