Loyal Necron Lychguard

Virginia

Good morning all. I took a hiatus from wargaming a few years ago, and now have decided to plunge back in now that my Necrons got a new codex. However, having also looked over the Vanguard boxes and the armies for AoS, mixed with a recent addiction to Total War Warhammer, and of course my 7-year old son being interested, we have picked up the books and vanguards for our armies (well, we open them for christmas). He was stolen away by the Steampunk Dwarves almost immediately, and I, in a twist no one could've seen coming, went with the Ossiarch Bonedaddies.

I am loving assembling models again, reading the codexes, er, battletomes, and reading the lore. I plan to teach my son how to paint and how to play, and Christmas can't get here soon enough.

Does anyone have any new-player tips? I'm a 40k veteran but haven't gotten to play 10th yet, and I only played AoS when it first came out and I could use my Tomb Kings (and then quit when my Tomb Kings were killed off).

Also, I'm curious. How popular is AoS nowadays? Obviously it's no 40k, but it appears to be going strong. My brother gave me flak saying it's a terrible game and I've heard people have issues with the lore.

Thanks in advance!

Embrace AoS for what it is.
Not what you wish it was compared to (fill in game here).

If you find the lore stupid? Then ignore it & concentrate just on the models/game play.

I've found it a fun game and when you look at the metawatch articles on Warcom it feels like everyone is nearer in power level within that "sweet spot" of win ratios they talk about.

I've also found with my ogres I didn't feel like I was penalised for taking a more themed list, though maybe that's just my local meta.

AOS has been an absolute blast for us, and we've managed to generate the 2nd largest community in California in my town. Our last escalation League capped at 24 with several on the waiting list for a spot. It's a game rich with decision making yet I personally find it much less clunky that 40K. I'm in a good mood when I finish a game of Sigmar. My son plays too, we are grateful and have high hopes for it to continue begin enjoyable.

PS -- my new player tip is to get the basics down first with a few games, then add in the General's Handbook realm rules and battle tactics. Enjoy!
How has it been going for you two?

My advice when moving to a new edition, pick up models you think look cool or have lore you like. Focus on the core aspects of the game and playing the missions. When the new rules are released, the core rules won't change much. There might be a couple of caveats and the format of the card will change but it won't be significant enough to confuse you. Then you can jump into the more advanced rules of 4.0 with fewer issues.
