Still deciding the next step.

But for now? Started some basing.

Using AK Interactive “Dark Earth”, which comes in 250ml tubs for around £9 each. Really nice to work with. It’s more liquid than I recall the GW equivalent being, without being anywhere near watery.

Going forward, I think I’ll do a bit of basing here and there, as it seems awfully dull and repetitive to blast through. Though it is a handy dandy Something Hobby for those days where I’m pressed for time or enthusiasm.

Once I stared basing my army I played catch up while covering the new work. So while I had the tools out and the flock paste mixed up I’d do as many as I could before I ran out of the mix. I’m sure I did a few dedicated sessions to knock out some squads, but think that was the exception not the rule.

But there was no way I was going to just sit down and base a few hundred models. That’s crazy talk.

Part of me wants to rattle through the 41 infantry I’ll need for tomorrow’s game. But I’m really not sure I can be arsed this evening.

Spent another day dog sitting (and wee bugger did an escape!), so a bit wiped. Also I’ve no idea how long this stuff takes to set.

For a game tomorrow I’d not risk the unknown.

How thick is that? You spread it around like a paste? You push it around with that wood stick, or was that just for mixing?

I use a diamond shaped offset spatula/pallet knife to push flock paste around. More convenient and ergonomic then just a stick, and was only a few buck from an art supply shop.

You going to add tufts or rocks? Or just go pure mud?

Ridin' on a Snotling Pump Wagon

Wood stick was for dolloping it on and some spreading. I’ve also got the GW Doohickey not-a-brush for that too.

For now I’m just going with mud. I think my Magic Box O’Stuff has some tufts, so it’s always something I can return to - like I intend to get Transfers on at some point.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
It’s quite a nice consistency. Whilst it would drip off a brush or tool, it’s something that’d take some time, and it clumps up quite nicely to boot.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Aaaaaaand it’s still drying.

Still, 14 and a bit hours to go to the game, so hopefully plenty of time!

Day 146

The day I got my arse kicked. Seven ways from Sunday.

Still did myself an enjoy, and I’ll be back for righteous vengeance!

Always good to get games in!

Any new purchases or adjustments to the paint queue due to battlefield experience?

Made in gb
Ridin' on a Snotling Pump Wagon

Not so far. I’m suuuuuper close to having all my Heresy era stuff painted as it is.

I’m still open to expanding the collection in due course, but with probably 6,000 points ready to go, it’ll need to be something I don’t really have much of right now.

Though I might be persuaded to trade heavy weapons to field a second Autocannon Squad. Thanks to Rend, they’re proper all-rounder,

And after a most peculiar “I think I need to get a digital GP appointment” night of head related shenanigans?

I’ve made a fatal error. See, in packing for yesterday’s battle, I had to take stuff out of my carry case. Specifically, Ossiarch Bonereapers.

Which are now sat atop the Magic Box O’Stuff….taunting me. Taunting me knowing I’ve got 40 of the warriors painted and another 40 most of the way there.

Which means….another army has entered the fray. And I’m pretty sure I can belt that out in a month, thanks to The Power Of Contrast. And being mostly boney and brown.

Bums.

Yeah. Think I’m gonna deploy them into the Other Cabinet. Give it a much needed splash of colour and thus inspiration. And crucially, free up the carry case for future.

Day 147

Doing metallics on my tiny speeders. Brush is misbehaving and splaying though, which is less than idea.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Finished the metal off now. Once dry, some strategic red followed by basing, and they’re cabinet ready.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Also put the Ossiarchs in the second cabinet.

Two shelves left free, and I’ve more Ossiarchs to dig out…

Which may mean I find myself in the market for more cabinets later in the year.

Or I can like, stop spending. That’s probably the smort option.

FIN

Bloody love these models, really fun to work on.

I may revisit the Proteus squadrons to add more red, as you can see on one of them.

If anyone is interested, I’ll be doing a thread, probably tomorrow, where I group my Legions Imperialis stuff into Detachments, to give a visual reference for how an army could look - and what sort of cost might be involved.

Day 147

Teeny tiny tanks mostly grim blacked. Now back to Secret of Mana whilst I await these drying.

I've only ever played Secret of Mana in an emulator, but I do have Secret of Evermore. A fun, if, challenging game.

Made in gb
Ridin' on a Snotling Pump Wagon

Secret of Mana completed (second time, first being around, like, 1994 maybe?) and the Grim Black on the Sicaran’s done.

Think a sensible move is to Goopy Base the other Jetbike bases, and get the bikes proper into the spray box, setting me up nicely for the rest of the week.

Day 149

Just the top coat of red to go and calling these done.

Well, apart from their alternative turrets, but those are an “as and when” job.

All done. No more Epic army models left to paint. But I do need to remember I’ve *loads* of terrain in need of building.

Nice work, Doc - will the next full LI army shot be before or after you've done some scenery (or some Ossiarchs)?

Gonna do a thread on what Legions Imperialis Detachments might look like models wise, as that seems to be a rare resource online.

Main thread will be in the Specialist Games forum, but for ease of sharing pics, I’ll probably pop them up in here first, so I can copy and embed into the thread, step by step.

Day 150

Starting on the Jetbikes. All under/basecoated and drybrush. First bit of Grim Black speed paint going on later. Should have these done by end of tomorrow I reckon.

Day 151

Thanks to “one of those days” at work, it’s a low effort Hobby Day.

Specifically, starting to undercoat/basecoat the Rhino Transport pool.

Also, I feel this thread needs a saga.

What’s the saga?

Day 153

It’s my birthday! Raaaaaaaaaay!!!

So not gonna paint, instead gonna nip round Chaos Cards and pick me out a pressie. Actually now kind of tempted to add some Cataphractii.

One box of Cataphractii procured.

Gonna do a squad of 10 dual Lightning Claws. Something nasty to cart about in the Spartans.

When I built my fist 5 capheracti i gave them all paired LC. Because sometimes you just need to blend things. Plus the 40k rules at the time gave them a nice niche.

When I got more when the new HH came out I made 5 more to fill out the squad. 3x lightning claws but 2 with HF/chainfist. For pre-8th rulesets I’ve always liked to have a chainfist or two in a squad for when heavy armor needs to be cut open. And if you are not taking paired claws, why not a HF?

Just theory crafting, not actually played. Also trying to figure out if they need/how to give them some of the other squad upgeades.

Low cost hugs. There is a cost of living crisis on.

And HF/CF isn’t a bad idea at all. Gives me some flex for sure.
