Hi there,

So i've been collecting Thousand Sons for over a year now and have a fairly decent collection, but I am lacking some options at HQ. I'm aiming to play some ZM games
later this year, so I obviously would like some ideas for HQ choices that are on the cheaper side. So far I only have Ahriman and a Praetor in Cataphractii armour that I've converted.
While I can probably proxy Ahriman for another choice, I would also like a non-terminator armour choice for smaller games or ZH.
Also the wide range of Centruian upgrades confuses me, and I don't know which would work well with Thousand Sons.
So what are my options?

Thanks

Your options are everything in the liber, starting with base centurians and then including all of their upgrades. Also praetors.

Useless factuals aside: The most important point of picking an HQ is what you think is cool. Be that a champion who gets a paragon blade and never backs down while inspiring those around him, a master of signals to ruin the enemy's plans, or a vigilator to put holes in the domes of enemy HQ's. The first thing you should focus on is what appeals to you and what you think you want to make / paint.

After that, you should focus on what you want them to do.

HQ's basically exist to buff your guys, nerf the enemy's guys, or just beat the absolute snot out of anything that gets near them. So whichever role you need filled is whatever you should lean into.

Chaplains are probably the "best" HQ for ZM games, as if you stick them with a WS5 chosen warriors blob they confer an absolutely massive damage boost. After that your best bets are probably going to be praetors or champions as beat sticks. The delegatus is a solid choice for a cheap-as-chips MoL who has a really powerful moral rule as well. Librarians are all-around amazing HQ's, with Biomancy letting you get over the ID breakpoint and also be resistant to it, telepathy ruining people's days, so on and so forth. Moritats are also really good for getting over the ID breakpoint via rad grenades, if you're so inclined. Plus they're excellent at shooting.

Thanks for the feedback. I will have to study the options more and just see what I like. A Librarian is an obvious choice for Thousand Sons, but I'm also interested in the modelling conversion opportunities for a Vigilator and a Champion.

Go for something narrative - For my Dark Angels, I have Erasmus, a Delgatus who is responsible for leading boarding parties. He is heavily modified- he lost a leg and both armies in void combat. He is armed with a combi flamer and power fist. His story is that he was a young knight from Caliban who’s rise in the ranks ended aboard the Prison of Darkness, a Night Lord flagship. While the ship was crippled when his company detonated their void torpedos, it was able to limp away at the start of the Thramas Crusade. When the main fleet found him and the remainder of his Company, the Lion was upset that he failed to bring down the ship. Erasmus was crippled and forced to take on multiple bionic limbs, an eye, and wears his scars as a reminder of his failure. For him, I’ve given him an extra order in the assault phase and made him a member of the Firewing as he is charged with taking out enemy command formations. Since the rebuke from his Primarch, Luther attempted to mentor him but he does not follow or have similar ideals as Luther. He only seeks vengeance against the Night Lords.

You could name him Septkah, a Company Champion who is armed with a Parragon Blade. If you can paint it to look like a frost blade, you can say he survived Prospero by killing one of the Wolf King’s champions (or a custodian). That he enjoys hunting the sons of Russ and in the aftermath of Prospero is looking for vengeance against the Emperor and those loyal to him. When Magnus saved his Legion, many of his Company were scattered. He and the remnants of his Company strike and harass the servants of the Emperor while looking for lost members of their Company.
