What drew you to the army, how do you want to play? What style/imagery do you want?

There are as many ways to bild marine lists as they are players. And unless you are playing compattively at the top tables, a bit of flex in how you can put together an effective list.

You can find good lists online, but you want one you will enjoy. So start with a core idea, or a few units you love, and then work around that to make an effective list.

I don’t know if they are efficient enough to be in top lists, but they seem effective at what they do, and cost a reasonable amount of points, so should be fine.

(grain of salt; I don’t play a lot these days, and am a generalist take all comers Ultramarine. Your Milage May Vary)

I just had a similar conversation, just a few posts down.

To save myself typing everything up again, going to link that.

Obviously, you will have different ideas of what you want. They wanted Imperial Fists and Dreads, you want aggressive salamanders.

I’d probably drop one of the dreads from that list (and maybe replace the other with the brutalis CC one) and pick up a squad of agressors. Swap the LT for a character in gravis armor to join them.

A lot of stuff can be swapped around to taste and to even points out. Just be sure you have some anti-tank fire, some horde clearing, some board control, mobility, etc.

It should be. What you want to do is look for things that combine well together in your codex and check them against the BRB. For instance the space marines get a detachment that gives shooting weapons an additional point of str when shooting at models less than 12" away. Get Close = More Stronger = Aggression Rewarded. Then you want to look for units that look cool so you like playing them and have good abilities that stack on that game plan. So looking at the line up I see this Gladiator Reaper. Looks like it has enough wounds and toughness to get shot for at least one turn. Best of all it looks like its bristling with rapid fire weapons that fit into the GCMSAR plan from the detachment choice. If this is driven right up on your opponent you get 32 shots of varying ability that all should be threatening to infantry and elites and anyone who is going to drop a bunch of ones on the table. It is also only 150pts so there is plenty of room for other parts to the list.

As a salamander player there are 2 ways to get you into close range

Option 1 transports
Rhinos impulsors and razorbacks are good for blasting up the table and getting squads of rapid fire and infernus squads on objectives

Option 2. Drop pods and deep strike
Drop pods means you can take devastator squads with heavy flamers or multi meltas and drop in on objectives or in melta range of armour.
Alternative us jump pack assault intercessors or terminators to deep strike and get into close range quick

Don't forget to also have long range anti tank and armour units like dreads or desolation squads

One thing to note: Not all gaming groups are comfortable using Legends models. I would definitely ask the people you're gonna play with how they feel before you buy or convert a Dreadnought Drop Pod, if that list appeals to you.

Of course chop and change your army to suit the place you game at.
The ideas still apply
