Greetings peeps.
I've been away from 40k and the 40k scene/forums for about 2-3 years but am looking to get back into things.
Last time I played was probably mid 9th or so.

However having not kept up to date Im definitely lost from both a rules and fluff progression stand point.
I think I'm just going to throw questions out and if anyone can help with sources or advice, much appreciated.

I got a copy of the 10th ed rules from the GW site. Are these fully up to date as of today or have any errata, FAQs, updates etc superceded them?

I play Nids, Wolves, IG, Crons, Eldar, Knights, Vanilla marines and Orks. Im aware Nids, Orks, Crons have 10th codices released (?) All the others are pending?

For anyone who plays 10th and uses Battlescribe, are you aware if its up to date with 10th and its rules/codicies? For those factions that are still on 9th how does that work? Are they handicapped badly?

I saw there is a free designers commentary on the site too but didnt get into it. What does it do exactly?

I saw many factions now have sub choices or mini indexes like noise marines for Chaos and Tau cadres etc. Are all of these in the main codex per faction or? i.e. whats the deal with them?

Fluff-wise, open to any resources or sites that have a history of WTFs been going on since the giant rift opened

thanks in advance

Welcome back.

You might want to look into the app, I’m pretty sure GW keeps it mostly up to date. I’ve not played a lot of 10th, so am a little fuzzy on the most recent rules/FAQs.

10th uses mission cards, might be worth getting. I picked up the leviathan box, so got the full rules etc from there.

As long as you keep Hissy fed with all the latest biomass, I’m sure things will go fine for you.

Yes. You get any FaQs/erratta etc from the exact same place on Gws site you got the rules. If it's there it's current. Look for the Balance slate, Rules Commentary, etc. Munitorium Field manual is the source for current pts.

Correct. This week Orks & Custodes arrive. Next week(?), 2 weeks(?) comes the Tau.
when this happens the index list there on GWs site are removed & if you want access to the current list digitally (through GW anyways) you need to pay for their app.

I don't use Bs myself, but I assume it's up to date for the Codices that've been out for awhile. For the stuff dropping this week I'd expect there to be some delay - just like there's always been.

It clarifies various parts of the rules. You need to read it.
In GWs quest to simplify (dumb down) the rules they forgot that a rulebook is supposed to explain the rules to you.... Hence this document. It gets updated occasionally. Treat as one more set of erratta.

don't know what you mean by mini-dexes. Each faction has several detachment rules though. each contains a few upgrades, a specific bonus that'll apply in various ways, & several extra stratagems.
The forces with the free index lists only have access to 1 detachment (except for the Drukari - who have 2!). when their proper codex arrives they get several more.

Nothing of note. Unless you count that apparrently there's now always been female Custodes. (a leak the other week from thier coming codex)

Thanks peeps especially CCS.
A quick followup, in terms of actually getting in a game. is combat patrol a good entry-way into 10th or better off just diving in with circa 1000 point forces?

Have points changed much since 9th? i.e. is 2000 points of 9th around the same still as 10th?

I found all the indexes on the GW site but didnt see vanilla marines - my googlefu failing? Or rules for like salamanders, crimson fists etc?

thanks again.

You'd need to check in with whereever you are intending to play, as to whether combat patrols are popular. It's probably not a bad way to get started but bear in mind it's very restricted, down to the options and weapon load-outs in each unit - and you may find that the combat patrol options are not optimal for a larger army.

The index for the vanilla marines has probably been removed because it's been superceded by the 10th edition codex. The indexes are only interim until the full codex for each faction gets released. I know, it's a bummer.

I've not got the codex yet but as far as I understand it there are no dedicated rules for individual chapters any more. What there are, is different detachments with different rules and benefits that are conveniently oriented towards certain chapters - e.g. Firestorm Assault Force is rather Salamandery...

Points are in flux. I think they are largely the same, so a 2k list is going to look roughly like an old 2k list, but that’s going to be hugely dependent on army composition. Good units get price hikes, bad one get cuts. And good/bad in 10th may or may not have connection to 9th, or your personal collection.

Marine chapters are largely done with detachments these days. There are still chapter keywords, so you can’t mix and match named characters/special units in the same army. But the burny CQC army does not need to be painted salamander green.

Once the codex comes out the index drops from GW site, but you can still get the combat patrol and legends rules. You still might be able to find them out in the wild of the internet, and they may be on the app? I subscribe to Warhammer+ so get more from the app then the average Joe, plus I actually have the codex. You might be able to get unit lists and points, but no rules. Not sure.

This is why I downloaded all the indexes. If you have other armies you think you may want to try, grab their indexes as soon as you can. Obviously, if you like the force and decide to commit, you'll want the dex anyway, but if you're like me, you've got small forces for 5-6 different factions. May not be worth buying the dex for some of those, but if you've downloaded the index, you'll always have the ability to play casual games with friends without needing the dex.

I think this is one of the biggest flaws with the concept of digital media. Sure, it's convenient while the host is continuing to host it, but it can disappear at any moment. With the money I've paid GW for WH+, I should OWN that content. But the second I stop subbing, it's gone.

Disk space is cheep. I’ve also been downloading everything from GW that the offer just to have copies in my archives since 5th? Sometimes it’s nice to have a historic snapshot of where things were, especially when people have questions about prior editions.
