Hi. I am a newbie who has played a few games with my 1000 point army and has purchased a Repulsor and Impulsor to make it a 2000 point army. It occurred to me that I would need to buy some new dice to act has hit point counters because they have double digit wounds. Then I thought it would be cool to put a dent in the top of those vehicles that the counter dice would securely fit into so you didn't need to move them along separately.
Looking on the internet, I see a handful of 3D printed little square bases meant to hold a small D6. I'm talking about something large enough for a standard D20 integrated into the top of the vehicle.
Has anyone seen or done this before? Is it a bad idea? Thanks.

My main concern would that it would probably be immersion breaking. If you could somehow make it look like a natural bit of stowage, that would be fine.
But I would worry that whatever you did would scream “I’m a game accessory” and not “I’m a futuristic space tank”
Obviously I don’t know your modeling skills or scheme. You might be able to pull it off.
I might suggest modifying the base, to add a spinner dial in there, or work something in there. Bases are already a little on the game/abstract side, and tend not to draw the eye.
The idea to have wound tackers that are hard to get lost, picked up, moved is a good one. I normally just rest d6’s on the hull. But have experemented with spinners and other options.

How about supergluing a permanent magnet inside the model somewhere and stick metal BBs to it for each wound it has?

I’ve seen metal dice, not sure they are made out of the kind of metal magnets would stick too.
But sinking a magnet into the model would let you keep the clean look, but still attach counters.

Metal dice are far too heavy.
And if youre bothered enough about mental effort to need wound counters on the model itself then why would you force yourself to read the dice value, do the subtraction sum in your head and then manipulate the dice to match the calculated value?
Just affix the number of steel BBs the vehicle has in 'wounds' at deployment and just remove the number of BBs as lost wounds require.
Mental effort minimized properly.

These guys do wound counters in a number of styles...

I tend to go old school and just track wounds on the same bit of paper I use for noting down VPs etc...

Some time ago I had idea for fancy wound counter hidden in the base, but it may be good for vehicle too. I was planning to hide battery, Arduino nano and single digit 7-segment display or a row of LEDs, and a button. After pushing a button value of wounds would decrease. It is some work to do, but the results would probably look cool It would fit especially some sci-fi or cyberpunk setting where you can hide the display in model of some damaged machine placed on the base.
