Hi,
I have just bought the SM2 starter set and also issues 1 and 6 of combat patrol magazine
so I have 1 Winged Tyranid Prime and 10 Termagants and 1 ripper squad and 5 Barbgaunts
I was thinking of adding the Warhammer 40,000 Starter Set which has :-
1x Winged Tyranid Prime: 1x Psychophage: 3x Von Ryan’s Leapers: 20x Termagants: 2x Ripper Swarms:
Could i modify some of the Termagants and the extra prime or would i be better to sell them?
any advice on what other models to add would be much appreciated
TIA

Why isn't "use them" one of your options for the other winged prime & termagants?
What would you modify them into? Some things might be harder/easier than others....
Do you know the Tyranid rules & what type of force you're aiming to build?

What you probably have are just the bodies for the termagants, and the basic guns (fleshboreres) if you pick up a box of the full kit, you get more body sprues, but also an extra gun sprue which will let you build 10 as spinefists, 10 as devoueres, and the 3 fancy new guns. I did the is add some variety to the otherwise basic gaunts I got in the leviathan box.
As to which one is the “best” I’ll leave to people more into with the rules and the metagame.
But if you are putting the little guys in a list, they cost peanuts, and you probably want a few handfulls to carpet the table.

Thanks - completely new to tyranids dont have a codex and know nothing about them - think I'll use them just convert them with a full set that gives me weapons as well as suggested above

thanks for advice

With what you have you will probably want to look towards the Assimilation Swarm detachment. It is mostly focused on "Harvester" units (Rippers, Psychophage) providing regeneration for other units (returning 1 dead infantry model for Leapers/Barbgaunts or 3 models for Termagants).
For further purchases, I'd look towards Tyranid Warriors as the first non-bundle purchase. They give something for the Primes to attach to and the melee versions are capable of hitting relatively hard. Warriors also like Assimilation Swarm since they are relatively tough and have a reasonable amount of wounds. Might also want to look towards a Hive Tyrant as well. They offer a lot of support functionality for your army and are reasonably dangerous in melee.
Good luck!

Hi - regarding the above
How easy is this do do as i am now in the position to be able to get the starter set and a single box of termagants - is it just a matter of swapping weapons or is there more cutting and modification involved?
Thanks,
Donald

Hi - regarding the above How easy is this do do as i am now in the position to be able to get the starter set and a single box of termagants - is it just a matter of swapping weapons or is there more cutting and modification involved? Thanks, Donald Dead simple. Included in the instructions even. Your “starter set” is these 3 sprues (really one big one broken up into thirds) The full kit is those, plus this one: So the basic kit you instructions are “build body “1", with arms “a" and “b” to make a termaguant with a fleshborer. The full kit includes the optional build instructions “build body “1", use arms “a” and “D” or make a gaunt with a devourer", or “build body “1", use arms “E” and “F” for one with spine fists.” where the new arms are on the extra guns sprue. But you can also just build it like it was from the basic kit with a basic gun. Now the arms are keyed to certain bodies. So you can’t just mix and match without effort. And I don’t know how they would work with the gaunts from the paint sets. But all of the starter/combat patrol boxes were you get blocks of 10 gaunts and a ripper swarm should all use the core frame. The fleshborers and devourers share the support arm, but you get one with every body, so not a big deal. I took the leviathan box (20 bodies) plus a stand alone box (10 bodies, plus gun sprue) to make: 10 devourers 10 spinefists 7 fleshborers 1 each spikerifle/strangle web/shardlauncher The extra gun sprue was picked clean, while I had a chunk of fleshborers and support arms to chuck into the bits box.

You can probably find some cheap resin printed arms on etsy or elsewhere suitable to make those termagaunts into hormagaunts (the melee equivalent, and to me more fitting for an endless swarm of charging bugs)
