Is this popular where you are?

Are certain factions more fun to play with or against?

I found out that the only 40k stuff that's played at the closest store to me is Kill Team and Combat Patrol.

Combat Patrol?
Not at all. Might as well not even exist. Same applies to Spearhead, the Sigmar version.
There was 1 six week CP league right when 10th launched.
The general opinion was 1) Not all CPs are balanced (shocking to hear, right?), 2) why should we waste time with an incomplete, slightly different, version of an already stupidly dumbed down game - when if we want tiny matches we could simply play unbalanced 500pt games using the actual rules & all our toys? Or, better yet, just play KT...

Kill Team (either v21 or v24) has a slightly more positive reception. Especially now that they've ditched the stupid shape based measurements.
There's a handful of us that play it every few weeks, though it's no ones favorite or main game. Just something different now & then.

For Spearhead, it's actually got a big following judging by groups and general experience. It's an actually playable game unlike combat patrol.

I suspect most of this edition's Combat Patrol releases are making the boxes better suited to a real version of Combat Patrol next edition.

Yeah, it feels like Combat Patrol is still being bodged together. The boxes were designed more for getting started than actually playing a balanced game.

Spearhead, however, was built from the ground up as a distinct game mode.

For the people I know who play 40k, all they do is Combat Patrol.

None of them have the time to do bigger games or commit to doing bigger armies.

A batch of new players at my local club still play Combat Patrol when they play 40k. They are expanding their armies, and getting the CP models painted, so they might branch out into bigger games later.

I posted a thread in the AoS section about Spearheads.

It sounds like fun.

Can I really play 3 giants?

3 (little) giants is certainly a spearhead - and spearhead is great fun, if you're uk based and near Nottingham, warhammer world runs events for spearhead and combat patrol in alternate months I think ?

Both are great ways to play the games without getting too complicated/overwhelmed ?
