I'm returning to the hobby after a long time. Last time I played was 5th edition Dark Angels Ravenwing with a squad or two of Deathwing.

What is the easiest army to collect/play in the latest edition?

I'm going to guess Space Marines, but I was told they don't play like they used to when I last played.

Well if you want easy to collect in terms of a more elite army that puts fewer models on the table and is fairly simple to operate then Custodes are often the go-too choice. Limited model pool; elite style of army building and space marines so basically generically good all-rounders.

Space Marines are a bit less elite, but by and large still fairly simple to operate; they have changed since 5th edition - but then again the game has changed and most other armies have as well. They've grown, gained new models and a bunch of other things along the way.

Going to second custodes. Limited number of datasheets means you don't have to memorize much, and their army mechanics aren't complicated. Limited number of models in an army makes them *slightly* less expensive than other armies. If you're used to RW and DW, they'll feel vaguely familiar to that as well.

ATTENTION
. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

I am thinking that you might be right.

Just a couple things, i downloaded the rules and I can't find anything that says you can't run all Jetbikes, is this a bad idea?

I used to do a lot of conversions, and I noticed the commanders are really expensive. Can I just convert a captain out of regular custodes?

Not sure on the bikes-not up to date on my Custodes tech.

But yes, you can most definitely convert from a regular one.

Well, per the rules (You have downloaded & read the Core Rules, right?) you are limited to:
1 copy of any particular character with the Epic Hero key word,
6 copies of any unit with the Battleline or Dedicated Transport key word,
3 copies of any other unit.

Other than that, there's nothing stopping you from spending all your pts on bikes/characters on bikes.
The max you'd get atm is:
Shield Captain on Dawneagle Jetbike x3 (non-epic characters) - 480pts total
3 squads of 3 Vertus Praetors (the bikes are not Battleline) - 675pts total
Total = 12 models, 1155pts Before spending any pts on enhancements for the characters.

Easy force to collect, build, transport (& paint).
Mechanically easy to play.
Not going to do particularly well all by itself though.

Umm, TSons, but you'll be using plenty of "counts as" troops, but not going too overboard with it. This is all in Aussie dollars, so it's cheaper where you are:
(Basic unhunted eBay prices, or Gap Games in Oz)

3x Psychophages (Mutalith Vortex Beasts) 480pts/ $60
3x Winged Hive Prime (Flying Daemon Prince) 540pts/ $60
5*5x Infernus marines (Rubrics with Flamers) 550pts/ $150
2* 3x Von Ryan's Leapers (3*2 Chaos Spawn) 195pts/ $50
Chaos(?) Space Marine Rhino 75pts/ $50
3* Exalted Sorcerers 330pts/ $80
(Way over 2000pts, ignore the below. I did maths bad, but good, for wh49k)

25pts left over for enhancements. 17 cabal points (maybe 15-16 after Rubrics get grouped, but still double Doombolt/ plenty of movement). You'll probably want to drop something for more enhancements. Probably a spawn unit. All wysiwyg, so it should be obvious of what they are. Might have to wrap a few bases in electrical tape w/glue, so they fit the base sizes (chaos spawn 40->50mm and Winged Daemon Princes 50->60mm). But that's easy. Adds a bit of weight to them anyway.

Tactically, very basic. Haz Rhino, haz melee, haz movement, and mortal and dev wounds. Will commit.
(It's more about where your opponent commits their firepower. It's ok, ie: everything is a gotcha, but that's just the stat-line we'll have to live with. We're built different. It's hard being a dusty boy with so much flame to spurt...)

$450 dollarey-doos, with the exchange rate to $USD making that: $282. Not bad, even with no Magnus or Ahriman. It's not a "good" army, but it's certainly "an army". Paint them in whatever scheme you want. They're as much Tzeentch CSM, as an offshoot TSons Cult. And a hell of a lot easier to paint well alongside ☺️

((Could probably run them in all of our two detachments. But don't. Run them in CoM, and winged DP's with melee dev wounds all the way! Turn 1, sustained or lethals, just for your Sorcs, to make them feel special. Turn two, it's dev wounds pound time baby. And yes, you do have a Warlord with a batteline unit, with a teleport. O, woo, indeed. F'it all up? Special mission time, random-totally-not-Ankha-time-baby))

Oh, I was just picturing my old army dressed in gold. Bikes with a couple harder hitting units.

Got any advice for me? I tried looking online but everyone seems to recommend taking two of the really expensive resin tanks.
