Was going to start priming my orks and I had watched or read somewhere that using a red undercoat would be good for orks. I was wondering if zenithal with a red mid tone would work or look funky. I was going to paint them using contrast.

Green over red will probably come out brown - depends if that's what you're after...

I'd try a test mini first, ideally not an expensive GW mini. Give it a shot and see how it works out.

If you're going to use red in a zenithal highlight, you would want it to be the base colour. Once you put a green contrast over the red, it would turn into a muddy neutral colour. You should highlight the red with either green, yellow or white. Those three colours will make the green contrast paint 'pop' once you cover the zenithal highlight. But as others have said, it pays to do a little experimenting first.
