The Overhead view is the classic logo from the Dawn of War games, but the Deathwatch Librarian has the other.

I can't find any reasoning online for the change. Any ideas?

And which one should I use? I am defaulting to the original one for now.

The second one is what is currently depicted in Codex: Space Marines.

One might have been easier to sculpt? Who knows really.

All things considered, it's not a huge change and I'd wager most people won't notice.

Then I will stick to the original then...

Now to buy a single Grey Knight, Custodes and Imperial Knight for my Blood Ravens.

Let the insanity begin!

It isn't uncommon for Chapter symbols to have fairly significant variations. Blood Angels are perhaps the best example.

Actually, there are three BR symbols. There is also this triangular, low effort one from Index Astartes BR published after game release to make the chapter "canon":

The game just refined it, made it high quality, and slapped it on 3D model. Now, why was this logo symmetrical? Because early 3D engines couldn't handle lots of textures and you had performance penalty with operations on them (such as mirroring, resizing, etc, etc) so designers made the symbol usable on both pauldrons and things like tank doors etc regardless of orientation or side. You can see it on logos like Raven Guard in custom chapter painter as they have 'wrong' direction half the time (bird head should be facing 'forward').

Now, for the new logo, this is technically a retcon, made because DoW 2/3 no longer had such limitation, but is it, really? If you look at legion emblems in HH books, master crafted armor often had logo embellished and made much more fancy (as visible also on old chapter upgrade sprues) so it's entirely possible Jensus Natorian (said DW librarian) got fancy pad as an award but 'real' chapter logo stayed the same, especially seeing 'bird' on his leg is still facing 'up', not to the side...

Ive noticed all three for sale from various online outlets. So which one should I use?

Maybe the one from the DoW games... because it's in the new Space Marine Codex and the Index Astartes from White Dwarf?

I think its the one I think most people will recognize, do you agree?

I would personally stick with the one depicted in the latest edition. Ie 10th edition. Less chance of you getting blamed for anything.

It's a bird with a blood drop on it, anyone looking at them is going to recognise them as blood ravens, especially if the shoulder pad is painted in raven colours. Symbols change and evolve over time, nobody in their right mind is going to give a damn which of the icons you use.
