Subject: Looking for a Cheap Army for use in KT/Combat Patrol1k/2k games
I've been out of the hobby for a while. When I last played there was 40k... and that was it.
Now there is Kill Team, Combat Patrol, 1000 point games and regular old 2000 point games.
My closest shop is a Warhammer store and there are plenty of different games available.
I was originally going to start an Adeptus Custodes force, but I couldn't afford all the resin needed to field a half decent army.
So I've been looking at my old haunts (The Imperial Guard) and am trying to figure out if I can essentially build one army that I can piecemeal out into Kill Team, Combat Patrol, The new Incursion 1k list, and the standard 2000 point games.
I think it's possible with a Storm Trooper Tempestus Scions list.
Use a 10 person Squad of Aquilons for Kill-Team...
Use the Command Squad, Taurox, and Scions in the "Strike Platoon Gorgonne VI" for Combat Patrol...
Use an all Drop Scions List for Incursion
Spoiler:
First Strike!
1000 / 1000 pts
Configuration
Battle Size
Incursion (1000 Point limit)
Detachment
Bridgehead Strike
• 1x Tempestor Aquilon: Close combat weapon, Power weapon, Hot‑shot laspistol, Sentry hot‑shot volley gun
• 7x Tempestus Aquilon: Close combat weapon, Hot‑shot lascarbine
• 1x Tempestus Aquilon w/ Hot‑shot long‑las: Close combat weapon, Hot‑shot long las
• 1x Tempestus Aquilon w/ Special weapon: Close combat weapon, Plasma carbine
10 Tempestus Aquilons
110 pts
• 1x Tempestor Aquilon: Close combat weapon, Power weapon, Hot‑shot laspistol, Sentry hot‑shot volley gun
• 7x Tempestus Aquilon: Close combat weapon, Hot‑shot lascarbine
• 1x Tempestus Aquilon w/ Hot‑shot long‑las: Close combat weapon, Hot‑shot long las
• 1x Tempestus Aquilon w/ Special weapon: Close combat weapon, Plasma carbine
1k even
And then have a combined air and ground force for 2k points.
Could this work? Or do you have any other ideas that might be easier/cheaper that I could use in all games?
(I was thinking that generic Space Marines would work, but I have never built a regular marine army. The closest I've ever come was the Ravenwing/Deathwing Combo of Dark Angels in 5th ED.)

As long as the KT has 40k rules you should be able to do this with most armies.
The marine KT (scouts) can be built so you have 2x5 man squads for 40k and still all the KT options. Them and the CP (TDA Cpt+Lib, TDA squad, infunus) make a 570 point core to a list. And since the CP parts are from an assortment of starter sets, you might be able to find them cheep on the secondary market.
Once you have that, just add units to taste to get to the 1k and 2k goals.

I don’t play Scions, so have no clue how well that list would work. What’s your plan for dealing with vehicles? Plasma? You’ve got a bit of it, but chewing through something with some meat on it would take time. Again, I don’t play them, so if there is some trick that makes it work, cool.
I haven't played a regular game of 40k since 5th edition. And I built armies around deep striking and close range shooting.
I'm just guessing here... and I just can't bring myself to build one of those oddball meta lists where they have crunched all the numbers and you get this strange army that doesn't make a lick of sense.
So any advice is helpful.
Are there any Deep Striking Space Marine forces? That was my comfort army. I'm not a tactical genius... I'm more like that horrible Blood Ravens Captain who really liked the Steel Rain attack strategy.

Full disclosure: I’ve mostly been playing combat patrol games in 10th, and not a huge number at that.
Deep strike is still a thing. I don’t know if you can (or would want) to go all in for a null deployment list. Drop pods are still with us, as are terminators. Plus some new stuff.
40k works when you are on the same page as your opponent. You don’t need a bleeding edge meta list if both of you are just playing TAC lists at the FLGS.
Make sure you have an answer for everything. Hordes, tanks, monsters, etc. have some units for actions, some for grabbing objectives.
