Let's face it. Most Imperial aircraft kits look pretty stupid, so why spend a bunch of money on them when you can kitbash a cheap toy and get pretty much the same result?

I started with this licensed toy from Disney's Lightyear. The stickers required a bit of Goo Gone to fully remove, but I got it stripped back to the bare plastic eventually:

I glued all of the fins, landing gear, and the rear door in place. I then dove into my bitz box. I built a pilot and a new hatch to help sell the scale of the model, which was originally a bit smaller-scale than Warhammer 40K models. I also filed down the nose and added some weapons and sensors. Most of these bitz were originally from the Taurox kit, I believe.

I have two of these for similar purposes! Looking forward to your updates.

The parts of the top hatch weren't really meant to go together, so I used some greenstuff to make the whole hatch assembly look a little more plausible. I also masked off the canopy with painter's tape on the inside and blue-tac on the outside.

I covered up some unsightly holes in the back with more greenstuff, bits of plasticard, and various bitz, including a bit from the old RTB01 Space Marines kit.

Looking great so far.

I've seen many repaints of this toy -and have a couple in the project bin my self- but I like your combination of bits to bring it a bit more into the 40k setting. Very well chosen.

What a great idea! While I don't have a practical application for one of these in-game, I think I'm going to try and pick one of these up cheap and turn it into a terrain / objective piece.

Great idea!

Thanks for the kind comments!

I washed the model with a mix of about 3:2 Contrast Skeleton Horde : Contrast Medium.

I sponged on some Wraithbone to lighten the model and add some texture and highlights.

Thanks!

Adding a yellow streak a mile wide. Well, a few inches wide, anyway.

Lightyear toys seem to have been made for 40k kit bashes.

Nice! Bold, weathered colors are my choice for spacecraft as well.

Looking good! Does it 'count as' anything or just for fun?

It's mostly just for terrain, but I might build a flying stand for it and make a custom datasheet for it at some point.

Another WIP. A bit more sponging with Bad Moon Yellow. Then plenty of Leadbelcher added, both with brush and sponge. A little Typhus Corrosion and Ryza Rust to make it look like it's been sitting out in the elements a while. Just a few details to go and it'll be ready to varnish!

Nicely weathered.

I didn't mention it before, but you choice of areas to put the yellow changed the first look of the craft in a very interesting way. Kind of suggesting tusks.

If you decide to name it, perhaps some tusked animal would be a good choice

I painted a few details and then sprayed the model with Mr. Hobby Premium Top Coat matte spray.

And here's the crew, ready to seek some lucrative cargo!

That is a super satisfying end result, Pariah! I really like the final product - the penultimate weathering you did really pulled it together and the yellow sections are great. These updates have been really useful for me - when I eventually tackle mine I will refer back so thank you for this.

The old school miniatures are the icing on the cake.
