Evening All,

So my son and I have started getting into 40k, I played years ago back in 3rd and 4th, when you threw less dice and vehicles had armour on all sides, my army had just got star cannons and i laughed as I watched all those space marines get slaughtered... good times.

this time round im eyeing up chaos space marines, but... i still have some disdain for power armour.. so im looking to build a chaos space marine list (slowly in a fashion that might not make my bank account cry too much) but no ordinary csm list, i like the idea of a themed traitor guard army, but instead of tanks or an abundance of tanks, id like to see those valiant traitor guard (and probably some cultists accursed or plain) surronded by demon engines.

so first off, any suggestions for good detactments and units to include? im liking the idea of traitor guard with the enforcer, seems to me overwatch for "free" every turn for every one of them can only be good ?

pairing units of guardsmen with a hellbrute would make the csm leadership test good getting both options?

so aside from units and tactics advice, im also a fan of substituting models for theme/ flavor, to that end i really like the idea of swapping out the ogryn body guard with the enforcer, and using a different model, maybe a demon model? some kind of blessing from the dark gods for the enforcer? (obviously still just using the ogryn stat lines), while the blooded kill team certainly appears to be models to get i also like the idea of buying a squad or 2 of regular guardsmen and doing em up evil.

any way, in my head love the idea of a traitor guard army... and some help connecting it all in a way that might win me a battle every now and then, would be great.

appreciate you time.

cheers.

It sounds to me like using the models you enjoy as counts-as of other models might be the best way to go.

So you might use the rules for imperial guard, mainly use guard models, but then instead ofa leman russ executioner (or whatever the plasma version is called), you use a forge fiend model with the plasma weapon loadout. Instead of ogryn, you use some chaos spawn or whatever.

That's probably going to be the easiest way to get you access to rules that "feel like" guardsmen (traitor or otherwise), and they have enough vehicle/abhuman profiles for you to have places to swap in daemon engines, daemons, etc.

I'll note that one of my projects is to use the GSC codex with the brood brothers detachment (lets you take a certain number of points of imperial guard units) as a way to represent my alpha legion chaos cultists. So genestealer datasheets represented with daemonette/bloodletter models, guard cavalary for seekers of slaanesh models, etc.

There's also the chaos knight grotmas detachment depending on whether or not knights count as "daemon engines" for your purposes. That would result in a list that's mostly knights and some cultists (represented by your guard models) splashed in without any other guard stuff in the mix, but it seemed like it might be worth mentioning.

Also, because you mentioned mixing hell brutes in with your guard, I'll note that 10th is less flexible about allies than the last few editions were. You can't normally have different factions team up unless you have a rule (usually a detachment rule) that says you can. So for intsance, the gortmas detachment specifically lets you take some chaos cultists with your knights. The brood brothers detachment specifically lets GSC take some guard units. Etc.

ATTENTION
. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.
