I play three different armies - Chaos Knights, Grey Knights and Thousand Sons, but I have different feelings about each...

Chaos Knights are easy to paint and the rules are easy to remember in-game. They usually perform quite well on the table too. They're a safe, if perhaps less interesting, bet.

Grey Knights are probably my favourite faction from a lore perspective, and to paint. But I can't bring myself to paint more units at the moment because of the obvious and overdue need for a range refresh. I'd love to add some Terminators to my army too, but not until they get an update. What was GW thinking - giving other armies new Terminators but not Grey Knights? In my experience Grey Knights also perform terribly in-game. These guys make me sad.

Thousand Sons are really good in-game. I also really like the new codex and the (stealthy) reintroduction of the psychic phase. Painting them kills me though. They're so fiddly that I really don't enjoy it.

I know it's luck of the draw, but GW made me wait a looooong time for all my 10th edition codexes (and I still don't have the Grey Knights one). 11th edition had better release with backwards compatibility (or better still, wait a few more years).

How do you feel about your armies?

I play ALOT of different forces.
SM, DA, SW, Imperial Agents, Grey Knights, Custodes, Imperial Guard (Astra something or other to you young ones), Imperial Knights, SoB
●Tau, Eldar, Drukhari, Orks (Grot tank force), Necrons, Tyranids
CSM, WE, DG, Khorne Demons, Nurgle Demons, Chaos Knights.

Overall? I'm happy with how each of my forces work
That said?
SoB - my least favorite. And least played. I just don't like the mirical dice system.
SW - my oldest 40k force. When I returned to playing 40k mid 8e this is the only force I played - because it was the easiest to dig out of storage. Over 9th & now 10th though I've only used them about a dozen times. I'm happy enough with them but I've built a dew new forces in 9th/10th + further opened my vaults ... I have yet to use the new codex.
●Imperial Knights - I just find the Imperial version boring to play.
● My Custodes simply lack depth/variety/bodies. They aren't really that entertaining to play. Or paint. They were built as a $ change last year - build 2k as cheaply as possible. I'd say I've succeeded as I've got less than $300 invested & can do 2500 pts. (Without allies)
●Tyranids- once again, not many modern games with them. But I love my Tyranids models, so the handful of games I've used them have been +

● my Grot force. One of my favorite forces.
But I am really annoyed with the 10e changes to A) my Mega-Tanks, B) my Big Guns. And I've always hated the fact that by the rules I can't lead my force in Crusade with the Red Gobbo (epic hero). I don't want ANY actual orks force. And here, by the rules, in a NARRATIVE format, I have to have a @#^& Ork present. I also resent having to have a runt herder now per grot squad.
(Orks that are integral to a model - ex: truck drivers are acceptable)

Of particular note:
My Drukhari, Nurgle Demons, WE, Grey Knights & Necrons all function as an extremely well oiled machines.
And my Eldar & Guard are fun as hell to play.

My new Death Guard are really strong.
Like, strong to the point where I'm irked at how overwhelming they can be. I've had some good games with them (one where I had run away on points, but only had one model with two wounds left at the end of the game, so that was cool) and a larger number of more lopsided games where there wasn't a good challenge.

My Nurgle Daemons are always fun.

The dark behind the eyes.

I play Imperial Guard, Necrons, and Dark Eldar.

Necrons are probably doing the best, rules-wise. Unfortunately, I just don't feel inspired to build a list. Most of the units I'd actually want to use have either been hammered into the ground in one way or other or are unbelievably janky due to 10th's rules having been written by a sea urchin. Because of the change to Resurrection Orbs (which is the only wargear option for about 90% of the characters), they're also stacked with once-per-game abilities, which I'm not a fan of at the best of times.

Anyway, they're theoretically strong but every time I've tried to make a list, I've got bored and given up halfway through.

Imperial Guard - Having greatly enjoyed infantry-guard in 8th, I wasn't a fan of the many changes wrought by the 9th edition codex, and 10th has not improved my feelings. e.g. I don't like that Infantry units can no longer take Heavy Weapons Teams. I don't like that there's no Platoon Commander anymore. I don't like that the Lord Commissar is only available as part of the Death Korps Command Squad. I don't like that all of the command units are now glued to their Command Squads and then glued further into Infantry Squads if you actually want them to survive more than 1 turn. But then this is at least partially a result of 10th's core rules having been dredged up from a septic tank.

It also just feels very half-arsed. You've got Cadian units, Catachan units, Death Korps units, and MT units. But it just feels like a complete mishmash. e.g. there's a Cadian Castellan but not a Catachan or Death Korps Castellan (or any equivalent). And no, the Castellan isn't a generic general because he's not allowed to lead Death Korps or Catachan units. It just feels half-baked.

Might still give them a shot sometime, but (as with Necrons) the rules don't exactly inspire me.

Dark Eldar - "What's that, Dark Eldar? We've removed all of your wargear so the only customisation you have left is Warlord Traits and Artefacts? Well then, it would be a sham if something happened to those, wouldn't it?"

Seriously, GW could sell a DE codex where every single page was just a photocopy of a different arse, and it would still be markedly less insulting than their current rules. No thought. No effort. No attempt to make the faction remotely fun or interesting to play. Just pure excrement from start to finish.

My biggest army is World Eaters. Unfortunately I largely build it before the dedicated codex and now about 2/3 of my army is un-usable. I am still deliberating whether to run them as WE or CSM. Disappointing.

My Dark Eldar - the army of mad weapons, gear and shenanigans - are now boring. Yay. GW had better knock it out the fething park with the codex, or I'm getting rid.

Technically, from the last 2 editions starter boxes, I have Space Marines and Tyranids. Never played either of them.

I've just bought in to Emperor's Children to try a different flavour of chaos. Love the models, but I am concerned at how limited the selection is, even with taking the detachment allowing daemons. Not managed to play yet, we'll see how it goes.

Currently, overall, my motivation is at a pretty low ebb. Struggle to play much anyway but have barely played 10th at all, and I'm finding it hard to make time to build and paint too.

My first 40K army were Death Guard, have them since 5th Edition. They're one of the hardest armies to paint but I like every single model I converted and/or painted of them. Plague Marines were also always on the rather expensive side (points) so you don't need that many models and can easily transport them. Gamewize they can do a lot of things, with Rapiers and (until 8th edition) Obliterators even made long range possible.
The only downside is they usually weren't as much fun for my opponents.

Nurgle Daemons followed as allies of DG. I must admit I never had as much as fun as with DG with them, but they're far easier to paint and they give you a Zombiehorde-Playstyle combined with some nice centrepiece models.

Orks then came much later but grew a lot during the last 5 years. They're fun to build aside from GWs newer models, they're quite easy to paint and my opponents like that they can kill many of them. They're also quite fast and usually there are fun rules with them. They lack a bit of firepower but not as much as opponents think.

I'm happy with all three of them. GW made me also outsource many of my DG models to CSM, but I still wouldn't describe them as their own army, especially since OPR brought them all together again.
I never sold a model or any army so that should tell you I'm happy with what I have

I stopped playing in 6th edition, and have only begun playing again in 10th. I have four armies that I consider playable.

Orks - I love my Orks, they are my oldest and largest army starting in 3rd ed. Unfortunately, I dont recognize them anymore in 10th. Even with all the new units, they just dont play like I historically feel Orks should, and to make worse, their power level seem spectacularly lacking in the overall scheme of things right now.

Tau - These guys are just awesome, they still play just like they should and just like their entire existence, win or loose just depends on what you brought. Tau cannot make a take on all commers army. You either have to go anti-infantry or anti-tank. If you try to balance it, it doesnt do enough of either. So if you focused on anti-tank and draw a Knight player, your probably good. However, if you pull a guard opponent, your toast.

Dark Eldar... opps I mean Drahkari. GW stripped the soul out of this army, however, they didn't nerf its tabletop effectiveness. All the fun and fluffy wargear options are just gone. However, Darklances still destroy tanks and the amount of anti-infantry 3+ guns on everything else is just devastating. Its still IMO one of the best looking armies GW has ever put out.

Space Wolves - I have not played enough games in 10th to get a real feel for what these guys can do. Add to that that their new codex is just around the corner, so anything I do know for now might change. But so far, I am saddened how we have to ally in generic SM models to fill very obvious holes that were not present in the 5th edition codex. However having said that, SW are the only marine chapter I will ever consider playing.

See pics of my Orks, Tau, Emperor's Children, Necrons, Space Wolves, and Dark Eldar here:

My first army and currently my biggest army is ORKS, played them in all 10 editions, epic and any dabbles in fantasy. I love them. Always have. The lore, the models, the art the books all of it. I have models in my current army I’ve had for over thirty years. It’s a real emotional attachment to them, and the narrative I’ve built around them.

I also have a good size marine army of a custom chapter that I’m very attached to as well, mostly because of the fluff I’ve written for them and the number I’ve painted. But it’s not the same as the ORKS.

I should start by saying our group only plays 5th ed rules but we use any codex that is cross compatible IE from 3rd-7th so my gameplay views are in light of that.

The only dedicated armies i have are my classic dark angels circa the 3.5 mini dex. it was my first army and most of the minis i own are that old. it is very much a combined force with a bit of green death and raven wings. overall a fun army.

My second love and my biggest force is my DIY salamanders successors. they have the most options as i have a little bit of everything from the 5th ed codex and FW units in there. the versatility of having close to 7K worth of minis to draw from means i hardly ever play the same list. it is also my dreadnought love army. with 8 between venerables, ironclads, Bray'arth and a doredeo.

The last is my admech circa 7th ed codex i really loved the idea of a good infantry force so i built it around cataphrons, been a fan of the admech since i started playing BFG when they were the only way you could play the faction in any GW game.

I also have a smattering of demon hunters and deathwatch that i either uses as allies or cobble together with some of my storm troopers to make a proper inquisitorial force. always fun to break out when fighting chaos (especially since it is always against the 3.5 dex for traitor marines, as it should be) or xenos.

I also have a small weird guard assault army i built as an afterthought since i bought several guard tanks just because i liked the models. so i put them to use.

Each force plays differently so i tend to rotate through them to keep things fresh.

So you didnt actually build WE , you buikt WE themed CSM - sometime in 9th? Earlier?- and applied the WE keyword of the time

The only reason you have "un-playable" units here in 10e is because your looking in the wrong codex.

Well yeah, exactly.

Started in 6th, so there wasn't anything making it a World Eaters army other than red armour, decals and Mark Of Khorne on everything.

As I said initially, I can obviously still run it as a CSM army if I don't mind not having Kharn and so on...
