I owe my opponants a BIG apology...

I always thought the whirlwind was not a guess range weapon, that you just put down the large template, and thats where it hits (within its maximum and minimum ranges, of course). Ive been doing this for months!

But today, ive looked at its description again...its a guess range weapon! Thats why it had the "G" next to it! I cant believe what ive been doing...id best get good at estimating ranges!

Read the 4th edition rulebook. You no longer "guess" with "G" weapons anymore. They are just indirect and if the target is out of LOS you roll 2D6 and pick the highest die for scatter if you roll a "miss".

So you haven't been cheating. You just need to re-read the rulebook.

surely, this cannot be a serious post, because anyone who has at least glanced over the rule with even a mild bit of attention will have picked up the change since 3rd ed. i have posted, in the past, questions concerning RAW wording and interpretation, but after reading this post, i can at very least boast that i have at read the rules in this book! common man, look at more than just the rule footnotes to figure out how they should be played.

Moz:
You: "Hold on, you rammed, that's not a tank shock"
Me: "Ok so what is a ram, lets look at the rules."
Rulebook: "A ram is a special kind of tank shock"
You: "So it's a tank shock until it hits a vehicle, and then it's a ram, not a tank shock, and then it goes back to being a tank shock later!"
Me: "Yeah it doesn't really say any of that in here, how about we just play by what's written in here?"

Actually...

This is a quote from the rulebook, page 31., under "barrage weapons"

"weapons like these fire by the crew guessing the range to the target point".

Seems pretty clear to me, you must guess. Why else would there be a "G" there?

That said, this is contradicted by...

"you then see if it has landed on target. If the hole at the centre of the marker is  inside the weapons minimum range, or beyond its maximum,  the shot is an automatic miss and has no effect."

Why would you guess inside the minimum range, or outside its maximum anyway?? You would know that it would miss!

Im not sure now...one part says to guess, the other part tells you something that no sane person would ever manage to do with guessing...guess 49 inches on a 48 inch weapon...

"weapons like these fire by the crew guessing the range to the target point"

The "crew guessing" represents their ability to fire indirectly, no LOS needed

The guessing for actually shooting the weapon is you placing the appropriate template anywhere on the board "Guessing" That you are within the appropriate range band (12-48"). There is no need to actually guess a number of inches as before.

Ah, ok. Thanks for that...I can go mad with my 3 whirlwinds now, without having to guess the damn ranges!

That's fluff, not an actual rule. The actual rules are in the next paragraph under the heading 'Firing Barrages'. Also note that the 'G' is the only way to tell a barrage weapon from an ordinary weapon.
