Oklahoma City, Ok.

just so it's clear i'm referring to spray painting. i'm starting to spray

an Armored Co. keep it simple, spary the majority color, then detail, highlight,

etc.... i know there are people who visit Dakka that live in humid

areas. it was 105 and very humid today. what do you do when you

need to paint on a day like that. i don't have any inside place to paint.

i was thinking of "creating" a paint box. a large cardboard box with a

plastic bag cover for access. any thoughts, feelings or suggestions?

thanks

Spray at night? Or in the early morning before the heat?

the only problem is i can't paint very well when i'm awake...

It's just spray paint. Since it's a spray attack, you should hit
automatically, unless you're playing Warmachine and then you
have to roll separately. However, spray attacks in Warmachine
allow you to boost, since I assume you're either a warjack or a
warcaster...

Basically? If it is humid, don't spraypaint. Even indoors, unless you have a dehumidifier, humidity will wreak havoc on spraypaint.

For most of us in the US, this is a terrible time of the year to spray paint (just as bad as winter) due to the excessive heat and especially the humidity, the latter which can seriously mangle a spray job. Your best bet is to try at the crack of dawn when it's coolest and the humidity is likely to be the lowest. Even then, you might want to bring the minatures back inside immediately after spraying, placing them inside a large box, and then closing it up until the paint finishes curing. This lets the paint cure at it's optimal temperature (70ºF) in an area with relatively low humidity (provided your AC is running cool), all while not fumigating you out of house and home with paint fumes.

But really, you're better off waiting until it cools down and isn't humid if you don't want to take any chances on screwing up your hard work with a bad paint job.

I agree with the others. If it's too humid, forget any kind of spray painting. It will affect the adhesion of the paint. Airbrushing using a compressor is even worse of an idea due to condensation in the air lines.

Almost all of my modelling/mini stuff is on hold during this heat wave, because the room I do it in gets far too hot. About all I am able to do is sit in front of the A/C and work on some Fruilmodel tracks for a couple armor models.

I think you misunderstood, I wasn't implying that you should literally "suck it up", as with a sponge.

I was implying that you should stop being such a pansy.

Can anyone describe exactly what happens when spray painting in humid weather? I tried a new variety of primer today (and it was very humid) thinking that it can't make all that much difference... I blamed the spray (which the guy said was better than GW) and made them replace my order with Citadel primer, but I'm wondering if it could have been the weather that did it? My results were that when held at arm's length the paint was just awful, grainy and lumpy and the worst crap ever, and when held closer I got a coat that obscured most of the details which I had to scrub off >< Are these things typical of humid weather or do I just have a lame primer?

Over there... no, wait, AARGH!

Just do it early morning. I have the same problem, living in Australia. When it's not stinking hot, it's usually really windy, which is just as bad for spraying.

Okay I just primed a mini (well a head anyway...) with Gee Dubyas Skull White. It freaking cold ATM and the "grainy, lumpy and the worst crap ever" - Ixe - effect happened? I have seen this in summer but I wasn't sure if the cold has the same affect.

So is my primer crap or my weather?

In humid conditions when you spray it dries in a very lumpy granular texture. Very blech.

Lumpy and granular is EXACTLY what I have. I think imma put some newspaper down in the basement with the mondo dehumidifier we have and give that a go -.-

Humidity, regardless how hot or cold it is outside, will cause exactly the aforementioned lumpy nastyness. Spraying well outside of the recommended temperature ranges (usually 65º-80º F) can cause similar problems, something about the spray drying and/or coming out of solution while airborne. The short, always, always follow the directions on the can, and even then there can still be issues (see HERE)

HA! I knew it was my evil cunning nemesis, THE WEATHER!

Ixe: Nice to know it's just a trip to the basement for you
I must wait for the tiny window of oppertunity Australias weather grants you between cold winter and hot as hell summer.
