So I've been thinking about starting a Necron army recently, and have been looking at tactics and army lists to try get a feel for what works. Being as Lords are the only truly customisable unit in the list, I've been trying to find out how people are using them.

Everybody and their aunt has a VoD and a ResOrb.

Good peices of wargear, yes - but these Lords are usually used to bounce around a squad of immortals. This annoys me because:

1. Immortals are T5, and so don't really need to worry about instant death (the ocasional railgun exempted), and

2. The VoD should protect against CC and thus power weapons.

What I'm getting at is that people seem to take the resorb as a default peice of kit, even when it's not really needed. In my (humble) opinion, the resorb should be on a lord who stays with warriors, exept on special occasions.

Not taking the resorb on other lords not only frees up points, but more importantly frees up points in your wargear allowance. Here's a couple I thought up.

Hunter-Killer: Warsythe, Destroyer body, Phase Shifter, Nightmare Shroud, Disruption fields - 205pts. Designed for use in a destroyer-heavy force, he accompanies a flank attack group (destroyers don't need a resorb for the same reasons as immortals - speed and toughness) before peeling off to hunt indirect ordnance, small firepower squads and ICs. Since he'll be in the thick of the enemy army and doesn't have a staff of light, I gave him the nigtmare shroud for something to do in the shooting phase. If facing fearless armies, drop the NS and take another two scarab swarms or something.

Stealth Bomma: Veil of Darkness, Solar Pulse - 180pts. Joins immortals. The first time they teleport they can essentially have a stealth field (yes, I play Tau). If you attack a flank squad, this should greatly minimise return fire - and not getting shot by long-range low-AP fire, if only for a turn, is preferable to getting WBB rolls against power weapons. Why are you teleporting next to power weapons anyway?

Disruption: Warscythe, Nightmare Shroud, Gaze of Flame - 155pts. Joins a min squad of Pariahs - all they do is make every squad within 12" test for morale on Ld7, every turn. It's just a big 24" blast marker leadership bomb. Only used in two situations: in cities of death with sewer rats, or using the Deciever as mobile terrain. I would never use this, but imagine in a megabattle - the Deciever pinning a fearless unit testing on Ld7, before then another unit gets charged by the pariahs and lord and must test on Ld6 (!) or hit them on 6s in CC. Sick. Tragically inefficient, but it would be fun.

Does anybody else have some alternate combos? C&C welcome.

Well, I played in a tournament over the weekend and one of the scenarios had us only deploying two units of troop on the field with the rest in reserve. I was able to put my two units of Warriors in 4+ cover. My opponent's IG army proceeded to come in damn near all at once. My poor warriors where getting pelted by S8+ weapons for two turns without an Orb in sight. Without WBB, Necron Warriors are expensive slow space marines.

Your Stealth Bomma will only work once since the Solar Pulse can only be used once per game.

NEVER EVER EVER EVER EEEEEEEVEEEEEEEER!!!!!!! send your lord onto the field without a Resorb. Ive been playing Crons for around 4 years now and every time i try a different wargear configuration without a resorb I end up severly regretting it. Now dont go thinking im just a Lord, Immortals, warriors, and Monolith Necron army as I have only recently aquired my fifth Immortal and i am still yet to use them. I much prefer hordes of scarabs, a squad of Pariahs, Flayed Ones (my favouite) and fill watevers left with troopers and lord with defensive wargear to look after them. Oh and Wraiths are really good for attracting enemy fire but not much else, they'd be worth it if they had power weapons. Well thats my rant aknowledge or disregard as you will.

the spire of angels

the orb is amust because there are S10 weapons on the table, and a lord on foot is only T4 IIRC  so he needs the orb for himself even if he is hanging with immortals.

my favorite loadout for the lord is the warscythe, falactory(SP?), res orb weather he is on foot or on a destroyer body.

Foot Lord is T5. A Foot Lord with a Warscythe? Why give up a weapon that shoots with AP3 and counts as a power weapon in CC. Rarely should a foot Lord be outfitted for CC. That's the main purpose of the Destroyer Lord.
