Of course it's worth it. Your chaplain will be hitting with I5, regular marines with I4, why not have a vet. sergeant with a power fist striking last? This will give you a chance to add a couple more kills to the total. Rather than paying for meltabombs for the whole squad, why not give them to the veteran sergeant as wargear?

Keep the melta bombs on the whole squad, they can be invaluable at times. Make the sgt a vet sarg with a powerfist.

I'm not sure about the necessity of Melta Bombs. 12 pts might be better utilized somewhere else. Might. I haven't seen the rest of the list. I suppose it will depend on the amount of anti-tank you already have in your arsenel and how many indirect fire vehicles you see in your local metagame.
As far as the vet is concerned, get a Powerfist. Period. The hidden powerfist is what makes all choppy units work. Orks get the Nob, Scorpions get the Exarch, and Marines get the Vet Sargeant.

"The last known instance of common sense happened at a GT. A player tried to use the 'common sense' argument vs. Mauleed to justify his turbo-boosted bikes getting a saving throw vs. Psycannons. The player's resulting psychic death scream erased common sense from the minds of 40k players everywhere. " - Ozymandias |

Awesome Autarch

without a doubt get a vet sarge, he will account for more kills than all of the other members of the squad combined, especially when combined with a chappy. He also provides anti tank capability, can instakill characters and multi wound models and makes the squad viable against deamons and MC's. A 10 man squad with an embedded power fist will kill dang near anything baring a tricked out deamon privnce. the vet srage is what makes the assault squad, and if i were you i would beef up the size too, the more boddies in the squad the more wounds that power fist and chappy have and the longer those flamers will be able to shoot. assault squads tend to be a top target priority, especially when joined by a chappy, they need numbers to survive attirtion as they corss the field and get maximum impact upon the charge. the melta bombs will be of marginal use, you will find the powerfist to be so much more versatile.

Always put the vet sarge with p-fist in. He gets 4 attacks on the charge, hurts tanks, hurts ICs, and hurts heavy infantry. Reecius hits it on the nose; he'll kill as many as the rest of the squad combined.
As for melta-bombs, I don't think they are worth the points for marines. Space marines have so many effective anti-tank units that using assault marines in this capacity seems like a waste. If you really need some tank killing, get some las/plas squads, a predator, a 4 missile launcher dev squad, or donkey cannons.
Plasma pistols can give the assault squad the ability to hurt light armor. They are also effective against heavy armor. Vanilla marine assault squads can have 3. So, if you have the points I would consider plasma pistols. However, the sarge is the priority.
