Subject: Jump Packs Falling Back Through Difficult Terrain, how to play it?

Hey all, the rules note that a unit with jump/jet packs 'may' ignore terrain when falling back. Question is: Is it players choice or is it 'may' as in 'does' ?

Let's see, it says Jump Infantry will fall back 3d6", always using their packs. They "may" move over any obstructions, but if they end their move in difficult terrain, then they have to test. I guess that means they don't have to move over obstructions (they can move around them), but they count as using their packs, and must fall back 3d6" at all times. We've always played that you fall directly toward your closest board edge (depending on scenario), and that if the direct move would end you in difficult terrain, you could instead take the most direct route around that terrain. Was there a particular scenario or situation that you were thinking of?

Thing is that you have to stay in your 'corridor' so moving around isn't an option.
It happened in a game last night where I had a couple of crisis suits falling back.
If the movement was halved I would have ended in difficult terrain, if not I would not have ended in difficult terrain (went right over it)
Then again, could 'obstructions' be interpreted as 'enemy models/impassable terrain' so that there is no 'trapped' for them?

We play it that if the models corridor is blocked they are considered trapped, but that is a harsh ruling that we use to move the game along. By the RAW the models can actually move any way they can without doubling back to keep from getting trapped.
Keep in mind though that that can only be used if the models will be 'trapped' as desribed in the BGB. I think it would be hard to 'trap' jump pack equiped troops as I would think that the jump pack rules override the falling back rules. In other words they wouldn't be slowed by difficult terrain, their corridor can't be blocked by enemy troops, etc.

Oh, I see what you're saying. The way we play it is that the Jump Packs, since they can normally move over terrain, that when they fall back, it works the same way. So, in your example, you would have been able to jump over the difficult terrain. The only way you would take tests would be if your jump ended in the terrain (we play that falling back 'through' difficult terrain doesn't apply to jump packs - they always move full distance). Since jump packs can jump over enemy infantry, the same would apply to enemy infantry and impassible terrain, provided that your jump cleared all of the 'obstructions', meaning the whole squad, or the entire terrain piece. If anyone ended up 'within' the enemy unit or the impassible terrain, the unit would be 'trapped' and destroyed.

Because the Super 40K vortex opens up and sucks the rest of the squad back with the single model that didn't make it. I love 40k.
