I have two problems: One, I am a horrible painter. Two, I can't stand playing with an army that looks like donkey on the table >< With these in mind, I've decided that the best course of action is to play with an army that is relatively easy to paint yet is still dead 'ard on the table. Soooooo, I've narrowed the choice down to a couple armies that I would feel comfortable paining but still are top tier as far as I understand it--I'm looking for input on the pros and cons of each of the lists in a competitive (1850 point) environment. Without further adieu, on to the armies: 'Zilla nids Iron Warriors Daemon Bomb (Word Bearers, Khorne, or Slaanesh) Necrons

I'd vote Godzilla Nids only because it would be one less MEQ army on the table.

Honestly, I was leaning towards 'Zilla for that reason amongst others. 'Nids are fun to paint imo~, and I'm hoping that means I can make'em look good ><

Yeah, I would go Godzilla Nidz too.
I could never play them as I could never paint them. We have too many incredibly well painted Nidz armies in my area for me to compare my weak painting skills to.

I iwll second the zilla nids plus a very low model count means you can get it up and running quick.

The question though is, if built competitively, is it in the same tier as the other armies I listed? Compared to what else is fielded?

Godzilla Nidz are in my oppinion, one of the top 3 lists out there in terms of competitive strength.

You may want to consider Tau, they are reasonably easy to paint to a nice tabletop standard (I have about 2-3 minutes in per drone, 6-8 minutes in per firewarrior, 10 in to each stealth suit, 12-15 in to each crisis suit, more for each tank)
As for 'ard on the table, they are not the easiest army I have played with but are the most fun I have played with and with the new codex is really versatile.

Happypants, it's not about time--If it takes me two months to paint it, that's fine. I'm meticulous... Just unskilled.

I find they are pretty competitive until escalation comes around and then you may as well pack up and go home before a single dice is even rolled.

I always hear people complaining about escalation killing units, but with random game lenghth, you still have a good chance of getting 4-5 turns with a unit.

@mosg, my point is that Tau can look pretty good with little effort/skill.
Also, I know that most people don't like setting foot in a GW, but go in for a few painting lessons and you will probably be surprised at what you can learn, it is all about 'tricks' things that are easy that make an army look good.
Whatever you choose, good luck and I hope you enjoy both painting and playing!

Its not just about how many turns will the unit be granted to kill stuff. Bad reserve rolls means your army comes in piece meal. If your opponent has most of his army on the board as you slowly deploy turn by turn he is going to have a much easier time killing you and have fewer shots coming back at him.
