According to the section about wrecks on page 68 in the main rules, the way to designate a wreck is to mark it with cotton wool smoke and flames.

If we go by RAW, then that means we must use cotton wool smoke and live flames.  I guess if we set cotton wool on fire, that would take care of both needs.

And this is a rule question how?

Grammatically speaking when they say you should mark the wreck with "cotton wool smoke and flames" that within the bounds of the english language that can mean: cotton wool smoke and cotton wool flames.

yakface's 40K rule #1: Although the rules allow you to use modeling to your advantage, how badly do you need to win your toy soldier games?
yakface's 40K rule #2: Friends don't let friends start a MEQ army.
yakface's 40K rule #3: Codex does not ALWAYS trump the rulebook, so please don't say that!

I am sorry but you are wrong. From now on every gamer will need to carry GW Promethium Fuel ($20 for 3oz), GW Matches ($10 for 5) and GW Anti burn cream ($25 for 3oz). Will be available as a set for $57.

2014 will be the year of zero GW purchases. Kneadite instead of GS, no paints or models. 2014 will be the year I finally make the move to military models and away from miniature games.

I don't know, I think I am with fullheadofhair on this one, no other way than lighting them up.

Drano doesn't exactly scream "toy" to me.
