ok so i got the new white dwarf early. It comes with 2 free plastic mini's, a goblin and a dwarf. since i dont play fantasy they are useless to me. however its good to see free mini grace there cover once again. The dwarf is really poorly sculpted.

I agree the dwarf is awful, the gobbo looks OK though.
I wonder what are the chances of there ever being a useful freeby on WD. Like a charachter model or a heavy/special weapons trooper?

I'd consider this a useful freebie. It lets people get an idea of the quality of the skull pass minis without needing to buy a box. Based on what I saw, I'm glad I'm getting the goblin half of my two boxes.

Hmmmm... didn't they say on the GW WD forum (before being closed) that they would never, ever do a free model again with WD as it cost too much and was more hassle then it was worth?!

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.

My first reaction to the models was that the gobbo looked ok, and the dwarf looked terrible. After reflection, I remembered that I've yet to see a dwarf model actually look good (except for some of the Mithril Minis). I just painted the two up this afternoon, and for single pose rank and file troops, they both look adequete. Nobody is going to mistake them for mutlipose, but they won't embarass anyone who uses them. As for including useful minis, I think that GW did something good by including what they did. First, it enabled anybody whose thinking about skull pass to scope out the minis ahead of time. Second, basic troopers are more generally usefull to more gamers then leaders or special weapon troops. By that, I mean that while if all you need is a plague marine with melta gun, then obviously that'll be the most usefull model for you. But more gamers need a basic plague marine to fill out a squad, or to use in a diorama, etc. Personally, I like painting models from outside my armies, and I prefer using a stock trooper. While obviously YMMV, for once I agree with GW. Also, I think that based on the 300th issue special, white dwarf will have send in offers for metal minis, rather then actually package them with the magazine. If you clipped the coupon and mailed like $5, you got a limited edition white dwarf model. not as immediate as a free mini in the bag, but still a nice gesture.

That's "rip-off Britain" in effect again.
Seriously, if you live in south-east Britain you can go almost anywhere in the world and think stuff is either cheaper or no more expensive than at home
