Subject: 1k Tau, 159pts left over, need ideas

My club has aquired a second location allowing us to play on Wednesday evenings as well. However the table there is only big enough for 1000pts games (as much as the marine players would like to play 1750 against me on it). So I have to make a 1000pts list. So here is what I have so far: ===HQ=== Shas'el @97pts: PR, MP, TA, MT. ===ELITE=== 1 Crisis @92pts: PR, MP, TA, MT, 1 SD. 1 Crisis @92pts: PR, MP, TA, MT, 1 SD. ===TROOPS=== 6 FWs @60pts:-. 10 Kroot @70pts:-. 10 Kroot @70pts:-. ===HEAVY SUPPORT=== Railhead @180pts: SMS, MT, TL, DL. Railhead @180pts: SMS, MT, TL, DL. Now this leaves me with 159pts left over, and I really need a SS unit. However I don't much like the idea of the 150pt GD+SS unit and everything else doesn't fit. Any ideas how I could get a decent SS unit into that lot ? I could drop a Railhead for an Ionhead, leaving me with ample pts for a full SS squad, but I'm worried about Chaos Lords. I have little experience against Nids, would I really need 2 Railheads against Nids ? And the Sub blasts are very useful... The more I think about it, the more I realise the only option is the GD+SS unit..Oh well, the whole list is experimental anyway, so I might as well give the unit a bit of field testing. I just placed all the models together to see exactly how big the unit is, its huuuuge. Those flying bases are about 2/3 bigger than normal bases, they're almost as big as my Crisis ! Its also really tempting to use those 159pts for another 2 Crisis w/ 2 SDs, but I want a take-all-comers list even though all my opponents are MEq and at my last 1k tourney I seriously needed more anti-horde power with a list that was relying on 2 RHs and 20 Kroot for that. Oh well, my next game with it is on Wednesday, wait and see... All C&C welcome Thanks

What about a stealth team? A 5 man bonded team costs only 160 pts, puts 15 S 5 shots downrange, and infiltrates.
You already have 25 infantry models, so another fire warrior unit would probably be a waste.

I'm gonna agree with ninjajuicer. However, your choice of stealth team is two-fold.
The first option is to go for a six-man team at 180 pts. Bond them and give one a Fusion Blaster and you're 1k even.
The second option is to take a five man team, upgrade one to Shas'vre, and give him a marker drone. Upgrade one with a Fusion Blaster and you're again even at 1000.
The first option is going to get you three additional shots, as well as higher survivability due to the fact that they are bonded. The second option gives you a 50/50 shot at getting BS 4, at the expense of survivability (no bonding) and of 6 Burst Cannon shots (smaller squad, Fusion Blaster upgrade). Both have the Blaster as a last-resort anti-tank weapon.
Burst Cannon Fire Option 1: 15 @ BS3 >> 15/2 hit >> 5 wound >> 5/3 MEq Dead
Option 2: 12 @ BS3 >> 6 hit >> 4 wound >> 4/3 MEq Dead or (BS3 Markerlight) 12 @ BS4 >> 9 hit >> 6 wound >> 2 MEq Dead
Both cost the same. The Markerlight squad really only helps with anti-tank accuracy. I'd take the first option. You can always drop the Fusion Blaster to get better anti-horde, in which case I'd take the second option.

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling, which thinks that nothing is worth war, is much worse. The person, who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."

I agree with Ninja, it occured to me later that a 5 man SS unit costs the same as a 3 man /6 Gd unit.
Corpseman: I only have 159pts left over as I said, none of those units fit into 159pts. Secondly, you do know rthat you cannot JSJ with Markerligth drones right ? And you don't need to be a Shas'vre to get them, a Team Leader suffices. Also, putting Fb into SS squads isn't, imo, clever. You're mixing up roles, and in the end you have a unit that isn't effective against anything. SS are effective because they can constantly JSJ between 17.999 and 23.999 away from your target, and 22" is roughly the average spotting difference, so you're always slightly further away than that. But by taking Fb you have to come within that average spotting range and also within rapid fire range. not only that, but a single Fb that hits on 4+ is not very useful...
Ninja, I'm going to use those 159pts for 2 FK Crisis w/ 2 SDs (exactly 159pts). I will playtest it against GEqs and see if I need more pulse fire, if I do, then I'll replace the unit with 5 SS, unfortunately I just don't have the pts to bond them, so I'll use the extra pts on something else, D-pod on a HH and a BSF on an elite Crisis TmLd.
