What is a good way to paint a yellow color?  Mine always comes out looking stupid.

First, yellow is gross. Second, mostly I've seen yellow models with either a black undercoat then yellow right over them, which i prefer, it gives it a wonderful contrast, or, white undercoat, then yellow, some sort of ink wash, probably yellow or maybe flesh, then yellow over again with some lighter highlights. You should probably look at the Eldar Craftworld codex, they give a nice walkthrough of painting yellow.

California ( again)

well i use to prime black all the time now i prime white and it makes the paint a lot brighter but the best way to paint yellow is to start with a tan color and work your way up too the yellow you want it too be or you can go out and buy the reaper triads of yellow and get the color you want that way???

Yellow acrylic is an absolute nightmare to paint with - my first semester art school I had to do most of the work in my color theory class with nothing but shades of yellow acrylic - I wanted to kill my professor. Yellow pigment is just too damned weak...

Anyway... use yellow spray paint over white spray primer. Using spray paint will let you avoid getting all those nasty white brush streaks that you'll get painting yellow with a brush. Then darken the recesses with a thin orange, tan, or brown ink wash. If you're just painting a tiny area, use several light coats, you might even try building up with yellow ink.

If you're using citadel colours with a black undercoat, start with leprous brown and build up from there. The leprous is dark and opaque enough that yellows show up with fewer coats. This is good for smaller areas. If the model is primarily yellow (like imperial fists), white undercoat is the only way to go.

For large areas of yellow that you want relatively even, space wolf grey then yellow. It'll work in two coats of each.

For my bad moon orks painting yellow over a black undercoat can be tricky.

For the best results i paint an undercoat of bubonic brown then i paint to layers of sunburst yellow followed by a coat of bad moon yellow.

just keep on walking with your head held high
beneath the light of that diamond sky
and set your sights on something just out of reach
and maybe someday you'll cross paths with what you
seek.

Let me suggest taking a look at Chaplain Desmodus' Marines Malevolent over at the B&C:

"It's yellow over a white undercoat. The dread's sarcophagus and legs were black though (because most of it was going to be black or metal in the end) so I started out there with fortress grey, then white, then yellow. Took ages!

My yellow recipe is two coats of Vallejo Deep Yellow, highlighted by adding white, then painted with OOP yellow ink (it's really really yellow unlike the current orangy ink). Shading is thinned mixes of yellow/brown ink. Simple really."
