Wondering what's a good place to order or get information about modeling Star Trek starships. I'm not looking for the models for the game, but display pieces big or small. In particular, I'm looking to assemble or buy an NX-01 for my cousin (I believe that's the number for Scott Bakula's ship...I never watched the series).

Starship Modeller is really the best place to go; lots of different scales, the forums and user galleries have a lot going on, and the SSM store has a lot of conversion kits etc.
Were you thinking about getting the sickness, Malfred?

If modeling starship models all the time is the sickness, then no. I just told my cousin I'd look into painting a starship for her birthday.

Definately SSM is the place to go, they have a sub forum just for Trek Modeling. Basicaly there are three model scales of the Enterprise NX-01, 1/350, 1/1000 (1/1400?), and 1/2500. The first two kits are styrene from whatever the RC2 conglomerate is called these days, and can be bought right from the SSM store, which I highly recomend. Fair prices, and super fast shipping. Both kits are suposed to be good, and the 1/1000 scale one builds up very quickly. The 1/2500 ships are resin, and I belive are one part models (there are two different ones with two different ideas of what the size of the ship is). You will have to buy those somewhere else, SSM does not carry them. Good luck with the model, and definately show us some pictures here on good old Dakka.

I've seen the Reaper Exarch with both weapon options and both look like things you can buy in sex shops. A weapon should not look like this, not even a Emperor's Children weapon. -Symbio Joe |

Oooh. 11 bucks and snappy snappy or 45 bucks and lotta worky.
Hrm...one is two feet long. Since the other is smaller, I think I'll go with the snap kit and we'll see. She really likes the show.

Check out the model section of your local Hobby Lobby. Mine has a few NX-01 Enterprise models.

Thanks guys.
Next time I'm by Hobby Lobby I'll check it out first, or call around locally. I just wanted to know exactly what it was I was looking for.
"Um, Scott Bakula? The Quantum Leap guy? Yeah him! Well he was on a show called Enterprise. No, not William Shatner..."
So can someone give me the fluff reason why the Enterprise looks like the Akira?

The reason I was given was timeline contamination from when the Enterprise E went back in time during "First Contact". Cochran sees the Enterprise E so when he starts designing a starship he bases it on the design he has seen. The profiles of the E and NX-01 are very similar.

The one I heard was just similar demands and needs. Star Trek fluff in the past has mentioned that there is some sort of warp areodynamics which is why their ships tend to be streamlined (not just to make them look cool).
Just like the WWII flying wings look just like steath bombers and modern biplane crop dusters look like WWI planes a warp ship with similar size and mission will have more or less the same profile, even if the guts of the ship are completely different.

I thought it was because Gene R. was going to have his ship look like a flying saucer attached to three rockets, and then someone flipped the design upside-down and they liked it better.

there is no real fluff reason, aside from similarity of warp field forces, the Akira class ships are way bigger, and have different technologies. The "real" reason they look the same is that someone got really lazy when they were thinking up the NX01 design. It really is a flipped Akira, you can supposedly even make out the escape pods and what not from the Akira model. Sad really, the NX01 should have been a Daedelus class ship.
